Product description
AN UNDERCOVER COP PURSUES A MOB KINGPIN THROUGH THE SEAMY LANDSCAPE OF NIGHTTIME ATLANTA.
Amazon.com
Burt Reynolds was getting restless with the good ol' boy screen image he cultivated in Smokey & the Bandit and numerous car-chase flicks of the mid-to-late 1970s, and this brutal 1981 thriller presented the actor with an interesting change of pace. Reynolds directed the film as well, and there was a lot at stake for him both personally and professionally, so Sharky's Machine--based on a gutsy novel by William Diehl--has an urgent, no-nonsense quality that lifts it above most comparably sleazy thrillers. The plot may be sordid, but Reynolds's handling of it is not. This adds another element of freshness to the story of a demoted Atlanta vice cop (Reynolds) who pursues a personal vendetta against a crime boss (Vittorio Gassman) after falling in love with a stunning beauty (Rachel Ward) from the mobster's stable of high-priced prostitutes. The climactic shootout is violent and bloody in keeping with movies of the period (when jarring brutality was beginning to be commonplace in Hollywood films), but Reynolds doesn't go overboard. Sharky's Machine doesn't pretend to be anything more (or less) than a tough-as-nails crime movie, and it's one of Reynolds's most unusual and intelligent films. --Jeff Shannon

Reynolds also stars as Tom Sharky, an undercover cop on Atlanta's Narcotic squad. In the opening of the film, a drug bust has gone wrong and Sharky chases the drug dealer to a city bus. The bus driver gets killed by the drug dealer. He gets the dealer, however for getting a innocent man killed he gets demoted to the Vice squad located in the basement where no officer wants to work. Where we meet what will become his "machine." Played by the great Charles Durning, Brian Keith, Bernie Casey and Richard Libertini. The lovely Rachel Ward in only her second screen role plays "Dominoe" a 1000 dollar a night call girl who is involved with the candidate running for Governor of Georgia. Vittorio Gassman and Henry Silva are the sleazy brothers who are running this prostitution ring. Features fine cinematography by William A. Fraker ,who also did the classic cop movie "Bullitt" in 1968. The flick also has some good Jazz tunes on the soundtrack. Reynolds created a film noir atmosphere. It was a hit at the box-office and with many critics. The taglines for the movie posters read.... "If you mess with a cop like Sharky, you better be very tough...or very beautiful." And "Nobody leans on Sharky's machine !"
Sharky is your typical "do it my way the hell with regulations" Movie cop ( they don't exist in real life ), which gets him demoted to Vice Squad, where by luck, he happens into a case that involves high end politicians, upscale pimps for top of the line call girls, mob members and all sorts of similar goodies.
As such, Reynolds has his hands full, but he has a knack of attracting other equally odd balls to his corner, and so, in the course of the movie, he ends up assembling a team, or crew, if you will, that for lack of better terms ends up being the titular "Sharky's Machine"
In addition to all of that, we have yet another fantastic performance from the great Henry Silva, who amazingly, is still alive today at the ripe age of 93, after playing a lifetime of psychotic pathological killers such as the one he portrays in this movie, and equally sinister, is another good turn by Vittorio Gassman as a slimy cocky high end pimp.
Reynolds fans will NOT be disappointed by this movie as it clearly shows just what his appeal was, and expertly it was featured in this film.
The question I would have liked answered before I upgraded to Blu-ray is "is it worth it?" The answer is a resounding "yes."
I have owned this movie on VHS, Laserdisc, DVD, and now Blu-ray. The Blu-ray version is the first version to have the complete movie in the original 1.85 (widescreen) format. That on its own is a huge improvement, as you can see the entire frame, and I didn't realize until watching this version (I never saw the movie in a theatre) how much director Burt Reynolds used the whole frame. There are plenty of scenes where things are happening at both edges, and you just missed them before.
The image is also much sharper -- time and care was spent in re-mastering this film, and it shows. You can see the pores on skin, the orientation of outlets in rooms, and even the camera in a glass window in one shot. Colors are natural, detail is terrific, and it definitely uses the Blu-ray format well. There are a few shots that are soft focus, and they stand out here, rather than being the rule.
The sound is also amazing. I always liked the score, and it is shown off well here. There's also some bass effects that were never there before -- not a subwoofer demo movie by any stretch, but fuller range than you'd expect from a movie of this era. The surround sound is definitely being used as well - this movie was originally Dolby Stereo, so it was remixed to provide discreet surround effects.
Sure, there are no extras (except a cheesy trailer), and extras would have been great. But I bought it to get a higher quality version of the movie, and that's exactly what I got. All in all, this upgrade increased my enjoyment of the movie. This is the version I always wanted.

Despite it's few flaws, it's not that bad & although Burt Reynolds the actor is his usual self, it's Burt Reynolds the director that really impresses with this film.
We also get to see how good an actress Rachel Ward is. Indeed this film would lead to her getting a major part in the TV mini-series "The Thorn Birds" &, shortly after, in the brilliant 1984 thriller "Against All Odds"
