Set here or shot here, these are the films every Sheffielder should see

Following the news that This Is England director Shane Meadows is back in the Steel City filming new Channel 4 show The Virtues, we thought we’d take a look at the other TV shows and films that have made Sheffield famous on screen.

Four Lions (2010)

This farcical black comedy follows four terrorists as they plan a suicide bomb attack at the London Marathon. London, however, is actually mostly Sheffield. Check out The Moor’s starring role.

Unit Eleven (coming soon)

Unit Eleven is a feature-length sci-fi action movie written, directed and produced by Sheffield filmmaker Theo Cane on a shoestring, crowdfunded budget. Filmed on location throughout Sheffield, find out more about Theo and film here.

The History Boys (2006)

Adapted from Alan Bennet’s play, The History Boys wasn’t actually filmed here (it was done in Watford and West Yorkshire, in case you were wondering) but it’s based in a boys grammar school in Sheffield. It follows a mischievous but intelligent group of boys, whose head teacher is pushing them to get into Oxford or Cambridge.

Kill List (2011)

This really isn’t one for the faint hearted. It starts off strange and gets weirder and weirder, culminating in a pretty horrific ending. But The Royal Victoria Hotel spot is worth all the weird. Kind of.

Among Giants (1998)

Before he wrote The Full Monty, Simon Beaufoy came up with Among Giants. Sadly, it didn’t have anywhere near as much success as its cheekier counterpart. But it’s still worth a watch, if only because the premise of the film is painting power towers in a 15-mile stretch just outside Sheffield. Now, if that doesn’t sound like the most scintillating plot…

When Saturday Comes (1996)

Sean Bean plays a drunken Sheffield brewery worker who gets picked up for a local non-league football team before being scouted by Sheffield United. Look out for Bramall Lane and Sandygate Road’s appearances.

Slade in Flame (1975)

Our managing editor Chris Wilson (who was around when this was released) says it’s ‘one of the best films ever made about pop music’. Quite the accolade! It features Slade but is actually based on a fictional 1960s rock group, Flame.

Threads (1984)

This social horror movie by Kestrel for a Knave author Barry Hines is set in a Sheffield nuclear winter and sees the working classes dealing with the fallout of a Cold War style atomic attack. Cheery, it ain’t.

’71 (2014)

Set in Belfast, filmed in Sheffield, ’71 stars Jack O’Connell as a young British solider who’s abandoned on the fractious streets of Belfast.

This is England ’86 (2010)

A spin off from Shane Meadows’ cult film from 2006, the This is England ’86 series was mostly filmed around Gleadless Valley. Park Hill Flats and Lowedges also featured.

How to Talk to Girls at Parties (2017)

Set for release next year, and starring Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning, it’s set in Croydon but some of it was filmed in Sheffield.

The Full Monty (1997)

We obviously couldn’t finish this list without a mention of the ultimate Sheffield film. If you’ve never seen The Full Monty (hard to believe) clear your schedule for the rest of the day and prepare to play spot the Sheffield landmark as six unemployed steel workers try their hand at stripping.
