      Critics Consensus

Tape's palpable energy and honorable intentions are often undermined by uneven filmmaking, but it remains an intriguing, rage-fueled rallying cry.

Tommy P The end credits are usually a marker you can exit the door into real life but not this Tape (pun intended). Paraphrasing Matt Fagerholm (reviewer at Roger Ebert), this isn't just a Deborah Kampmeier (writer, editor & director) movie but a rallying cry of our angels. Affinity • Reality • Communication! An ideal Lux would say to his interviewees that we seek the germ of Affinity in this audition to enable communication with one another. Still, our Reality, the blind spot in the mirror we miss, allows for honest communication. Embracing one's Reality is when we consciously adopt the angle and eyes of Pearl's parents and her community, who welcome her evolution and dreams. When the Reality of her parents is added to the mix, it makes Communication with Pearl fool-proof, consensual nonetheless, but without abuse. A glass to Annarosa for playing herself and (her Reality) for calling this out! Peace! Words, Tommy Peters. @deborahkampmeier Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/21/22 Full Review Audience Member Overall it was very disturbing and realistic movie, set in a space where it shows how sexual harrasment actually works and who covers whom. It wasn't great, nor is a must watch movie but considering it's based by a true story with a great performance from a main lead you may give it a watch. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member How do you spell Naive? Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member Went in with high hopes, unfortunately it's just a really poorly made movie. It has a important message, but is just written/directed so poorly. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member A story about issues that need to be told. Unfortunately the directing & screenplay of the film are simply terrible. Feels like a student film, and I mean that in the worse ways Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review jane f Really powerful film, everyone gave a fantastic performance. Everyone should watch TAPE, I highly recommend!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Amy Nicholson FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It becomes heavy and clumsy, and I was brokenhearted about it because there's a bleeding, raw anger to this film. Mar 28, 2020 Full Review Kate Erbland indieWire "Tape" will inspire conversations - its woefully conceived final sequence literally begs for them - but perhaps not the ones Kampmeier anticipated when crafting a film that, for all its missteps, is built on necessary storytelling. Rated: C Mar 27, 2020 Full Review Kimber Myers Los Angeles Times While "Tape" is admirable in its aims to frankly explore what happens behind closed doors, it's less laudable in its execution. Mar 27, 2020 Full Review Carla Hay Culture Mix Tape wants desperately to become a classic film for the #MeToo era, but the movie's dumb ending means that Tape won't even register as a footnote. Jul 15, 2020 Full Review Jennie Kermode Eye for Film Ultimately, the film is most effective as a warning due to the ordinariness of what it depicts. Rated: 3/5 Jun 29, 2020 Full Review Alex Saveliev Film Threat The fact that every moment is coated with a thick smear of pretentiousness - from the tacky, 1990's trip-hop soundtrack to the permeating, suffocating sermonizing / finger-wagging - is perhaps most insufferable.
