With my 2nd child, I knew that I would use this great diaper right from the beginning so that her delicate skin would not be exposed to harmful chemicals such as chlorine and perfumes. It seemed like just as her due date was approaching, the local stores starting putting the Seventh Generation diapers on clearance and replacing them with Earth's Best. I had a bunch of packages of Seventh Generation given to us as gifts for baby showers, but when they were running low, I decided to go ahead and try the Earth's Best and was sadly disappointed. The material felt cheap, made a more harsh "rustling" sound with movement, and leaked much more easily. Next, I turned to the internet and ordered a couple of packages of Seventh Generation from drugstore.com, but they too seemed to be phasing them out of their stock.
Then, I started seeing comments of people using Honestcompany diapers from Jessica Alba's site and decided to give those a try as well. They have cute designs for boys and girls, are white, as opposed to the tan SG diaper, and have a convenient monthly service. I ordered a sample pack and was fairly impressed with the diaper itself. The material was nice, the designs were cute, and they didn't leak any more than the SG. However, in the monthly diaper club it includes wipes and I hated the wipes! They were not very moist and felt to "bare". I am used to the silky smooth feel of Pampers Sensitive wipes, I guess. So, the cost of the diapers didn't really appeal to me compared to the cost and convenience of the Amazon program.
So, back to the SG diapers...
Material/Look: the tan, natural color is a non-issue for me. They did have cute little Lorax designs on the front for a little while, but are now back to plain and my view on that is that nobody sees the diaper unless they are changing it, so who cares about the cutesie design. My husband thought it was a little bit more challenging to know which side is up for a while though :-) The diapers are thin in a good way. Not too bulky when dry. The are soft to the touch and not noisy with movement.
Tabs: They are stretchy and position nicely for a snug fit. I try to make sure they are low enough so the edges will not rub on the skin.
Smell: They are scent free!! Now...once there is something in there, that might be a different story, but so far whether wet or poopy, I have not had any overwhelming smells. Even now that my daughter is eating solids, including spinach, it is rare that the smell is very noticeable.
Absorbancy: Wet....no problem!! My daughter was sleeping through the night 8-10 hours from the time she was a month old and I never had wet leaks in these diapers. As long as you are using the right size, it should not be an issue. As far as stools...I EBF and we had very loose stools until she started adding solids at 6 months. The BF stools could be very loose and would leak out of the leg holes or out of the top of the back at time. This happens with ALL diapers!! I did not find it to be an issue. Now that we are having more solid stools, there is no leaking at all. Again, I find these diapers VERY absorbant and definitely better than the Earth's Best brand.
Size: Fairly true to weight averages as listed, but depends on the childs build. I find that if the baby is longer than average, you will probably need to use a size up from what is listed for weight. We are in size 3 at 10 months old, 18lbs, 29in. We have been in size 3 for a long time.
Cost: The Amazon subscribe and save probably doesn't really save me anything except time/effort. The cost actually went up from when I first signed up, but it is still comperable to what I would pay at the store (if they were stocked).
Subscribe & Save program: Easy to adjust scheduled deliveries. Can change frequency and date which shipments will be delivered. I find that I don't actually need a shipment every month, so I end up going to my account and changing the date to make it more like 1 1/2 - 2 months between deliveries. Easy to change sizes when needed as well. Overall satisified with this service.
What we have here is a diaper that soaks up waste. And its disposable!
These are great diapers for those looking for a way to avoid many of the chemicals found in others but who also just want the job done. Some have complained about a change since older ones, or how these "amazon diapers are different". I don't know what any of that means, because we have only ordered them from here.
And except for two times where they leaked (because I, the dad, forgot to fold the flaps out - see, me, taking personal responsibility) these have been great!
Also, using the subscribe and save, they turn out way cheaper than many other options. So, we will continue with these for the next size and see how those go as well.
Also, when it comes to unsavory things (poop), these diapers hold explosions fairly well and I've never had a leak. I can handle pee leaks, but poopsplosions? Uh uh. No way. So they do their job.
I've seen a few people discuss how rough and weird these diapers look, but they don't feel rough to me. I think if you're a natural diaper user, these wouldn't feel rough, but if you're used to Huggies, Luvs, or Pampers, then Seventh Generation would look and feel like paper towels. Lower expectations a bit for these. They won't be as soft as the Big Namers or cloth diapers, but if you want to use disposables, it is so important to go as natural as you can so your baby isn't being exposed to chemicals constantly and you aren't clogging landfills. Speaking of landfills, the one issue I have with these is that they're not biodegradable, but it's nearly impossible to find good biodegradable diapers (Honest's outside panels are, at least) and anything thrown in a landfill doesn't degrade anyway, no matter what it's made of. Kind of horrifying, but if you're looking to a. feel a bit better about your diaper choices and b. reduce your baby's chemical intake, Seventh Generation is a good cheaper choice.
