I was introduced to Paige Toon’s work last year when I read “Only Love Can Hurt Like This”-a 5 star read for me.

And, now that I have finished “Seven Summers” it is clear to me that she definitely knows how to pen love stories that tug on your heart strings!! 💔 Her books are definitely NOT Rom-Coms.

Liv and Finn met six summers ago when he was filling in for the lead singer of a band that was headlining at Seaglass-the restaurant/ bar of her beach town on the rugged Cornish coastline.

A devastating tragedy will bond them for life.

But Finn’s life is in LA with his own band, and Liv’s is in Cornwall where she has family commitments-her dreams of studying Sculpture in London, long gone.

Liv decides it would be TOO DIFFICULT to stay in touch-but if both are single when he returns to visit, they will pick up where they left off. And, for awhile, they do.

The story revisits each Summer from the time that they met, and then follows with SUMMER NOW.

I was immediately engrossed in their lives and rooting for them to make it work!

Just a couple of things niggled at me and prevented me from awarding the book 5 stars.

The first was that they both seemed mature beyond their years, though I could give them the benefit of the doubt because each has suffered things that would force you to grow up fast.

The second was that once we had a resolution in the seventh summer, the end of the book and the subsequent “epilogue summers” felt rushed in comparison.

And, finally, I didn’t cry-which is a requirement for a 5 star rating for me in this genre. Heartbreaking things happen but I didn’t feel crushed by the end result, though other readers may feel differently.

Still, I am definitely a fan who now watches for this author’s work, and I can definitely give this book my stamp of approval!

This book is a heart-wrenching rollercoaster that shattered my expectations. I'm usually not one for love triangles, but from the moment I met the characters and learned about their struggles, I was hooked. Grab a box of tissues, because you're going to need them.

The core of the story revolves around Liv, Tom, and Finn. It's a tale of six summers that lead to falling in love and one summer that changes everything. Liv and Finn first cross paths while working at a bar on the rugged Cornish coastline. Their futures brim with promise, but a night of passion ends in a tragedy that binds them together inextricably. They make a promise - if they're both single, they'll spend the summer together every year. Finn's life is in LA with his band, while Liv's roots lie in Cornwall with her family. It's a promise that seems simple enough, but love is far from simple.

Liv, an artist carrying the weight of the world after a tragic accident disrupts her life plan, and Finn, the adorable yet guarded musician, forge a unique bond. Their romance is a slow burn, and the tension between them is electric. You can't help but root for them, even though there are countless reasons it might not work out.

Enter Tom, a mysterious newcomer in Liv's hometown. It's easy to dismiss him at first, but as the story unfolds, you find yourself drawn to him, much like Liv. The book skillfully shuttles between the present day and the events of the previous six summers, keeping you on edge as you wait for the other shoe to drop, trying to unravel the "how" of it all.

"Seven Summers" is a breathtaking emotional journey that takes your heart and breaks it into a million pieces, only to mend it back together, repeating the process multiple times. The portrayal of disabilities in the story is authentic and touching, and the writing is stunning. You'll feel like you're living each moment with the characters, experiencing their highs and lows. The raw, emotional depth of this story had me sobbing uncontrollably at times.

Liv's character development and her journey over the course of seven summers are nothing short of brilliant. This book isn't just about Liv and Finn's love story; it's about Liv's growth and how she copes with her grief. It's a journey of self-discovery, showing how we often hinder our own progress. The shifting timeline and the way the story unfolds are captivating.

Paige Toon has outdone herself with "Seven Summers." As a longtime fan of her work, I always look forward to her books, and this one is no exception. A big thank you to NetGalley and PENGUIN GROUP PUTMAM/ G. P. Putnam's Sons for providing me with a digital reviewer copy of this profoundly moving book in exchange for my honest thoughts.

Five stars! Six stars! Seven amazing stars for Seven devastating and beautiful Summers!

Paige Toon is at her best when she throws in multiple love interests, grief and traumas, and secrets solved in little snippets, so when I read the blurb of Seven Summers, excitement settled in my chest.

I've been a Paige Toon fan for years but found her latest book, Only Love Can Hurt Like This, repetitive and average. To not really love an author's new novel whose books were always my comfort reads (even when they hurt like h*ll) felt like I lost a piece of myself. And now I'm so happy I hit that five-star button so easily! This story is fighting over the number one spot with The One We Fell in Love With and Someone I Used to Know, two of my most favorite Paige Toon romances.

Beautiful. Lyrical. Heartwarming. Devastating. All words to describe my feelings for Seven Summers. From the first sentence, I swallowed up the words at a feverish pace and let the story flood me. D*mn, how I love these kinds of books. Multiple timelines, not knowing where the story will end, love alternated with darkness, likable, flawed characters, sooo many feelings, and, of course, Cornwall. I've never been to Cornwall, but Paige made me crave (again!) to visit that part of England somewhere in the future.

When I read about a quarter of the book, I fell in love with Finn, and I couldn't imagine feeling the same way about Tom. Ever. And then I fell head over heels for him, too, and I started rooting for Liv and Tom. But then I wanted Live to be with Finn again, and then with Tom and … So if I wasn't able to choose between those two men, how could Liv?

Seven Summers was a punch to my gut. It wrecked me in every possible way, and when I finally felt hope, it got knocked out of me again. Tears clouded my eyes during those last few chapters, and I had to put my e-reader away several times. When I finally had the courage to pick it up, those effing tears immediately started running again. For those who fear that there won’t be a HEA, don’t panic! There will be one, I promise.

Paige Toon is back, everyone! This story is definitely not average or repetitive. It's one of the best books I read this year, and I'm proudly presenting it on my most memorable 2023 shelf!

I received an ARC from Penguin Group Putnam and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

WOWZA!

Seven Summers is not your typical romance book. Not by a long shot. It is original, endearing, refreshing, emotion evoking, thought provoking, and captivating. It's all about the journey for me with romance books and WOW what a journey!

Liv and Finn had bright futures when they met at a bar on the Cornish coastline. Liv is a local who dreams of being an artist and Finn is a musician from Los Angeles. They share a wonderful night together but then tragedy strikes. Finn must return to L.A. while Liv must stay in Cornwall. They make a promise to spend their summers together if both are single...

Tom is a new arrival in Cornwall and he and Liv have a connection....

I had no idea what I was getting into when I began this book. I loved the author's book Only Love Can Hurt Like This and was excited to start this book. I was instantly transported to the Cornish Coast, charmed by the characters, and feeling for what life throws their way. I kept my fingers crossed for them to both be single so they could spend their summers together. I also loved Tom's character and rooted for him and Liv as well.

This book had me thinking about it when I had to put it down. My heart soared, my heart broke, I cheered, I felt sad, I smiled, and I enjoyed the ride Page Toon took me on. Plus, I adored Liv's brother.

Wonderfully written, endearing, captivating and evoking emotion.

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review as part of the book tour hosted by Random Things Tours.

Seven Summers was such a heartfelt, heartwarming, heartbreaking, and thought-provoking read that took me on an emotional rollercoater journey from start to finish.
This was so tenderly written and draws you in from page one. Liv felt like an old friend, and I felt I was right there with her on her journey throughout this story.
Liv and Tom meet six summers ago when Liv returns home from studying abroad, and she is instantly drawn to him from the second she lays eyes on him and hears him sing in his band. The pair get closer over the course of the summer break, and just before the end of the summer, tragedy strikes and leaves Livs life blown apart.
I sobbed at this part of the story and had to pull myself together to continue. Tom returns to the US to pursue his dream of being a musician/song writer and they make a pact that each summer he returns to visit his family they will get together but only if they're both single. As such, the book goes back and forth between the present and the previous six summers, and I was rooting for them from the moment they met. They just fit together so beautifully. Liv couldn't go with him to the US because of being needed at home and wouldn't stand in the way of Fins dreams. When Liv meets Tom and she finds love and happiness that's both steady and pure again, I was so happy for her and felt such mixed feeling when Finn returned. I'm being cautious what I say as I don't want to spoil this book for anyone. The love between Liv and Fin and Liv and Tom is beautiful, raw, and tender, and this book broke my heart and pieced it back together again. This would make an amazing film, and in all honesty, I think it will be made into one. It's just so beautiful and unique. Definitely have tissues at the ready!

Seven Summers took my emotions on one heck of a wild ride and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Liv and Finn have known each other since secondary school, but they reconnect while working at a restaurant/bar on the Cornish coastline six summers ago. A tragic event occurs, intertwining their lives and bringing them closer together. But as summer comes to an end, Finn has to return to his life in LA with his band while Liv remains in Cornwall tending to her family commitments and working on her sculptures when she has the time. They make a promise, Finn will return every summer, and if they are single they will pick back up where they left off. Six summers later, Liv finds herself falling for Tom, a mysterious stranger new to town.

The book is told in multiple timelines, current day alternating with the previous six summers. I do not care for love triangles and I normally have a clear favorite, BUT that wasn’t the case with this situation. Be warned, this is not a rom-com. It is both hopeful and heartbreaking. Liv, Finn, and Tom each had their issues but I loved them all. And what I love most about Paige Toon’s books is that she doesn’t rely on the miscommunication trope, but rather life circumstances tend to be the issue which I find quite realistic. She also is able to capture that feeling of young love and show how it grows and matures over the years.

I had a few minor issues, but one of them I cannot detail because I think it would definitely be a spoiler. The other was the epilogue which wasn’t really an epilogue but rather a continuation of the story. For as long as the epilogue was, it breezed over significant events that could have used more detail and which would have been better suited being explored a little more in additional chapters instead being rushed in the epilogue. 4.5 stars rounded up because Paige Toon had me in tears more than once in this book. 💫

I am currently working my way through her previous books and will continue to read anything she writes in the future. I’ll just be sure to have a box of tissues close by. 😪

My thanks to G.P. Putnam's Sons and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

I have a feeling this is going to be one of the top beach reads of the summer! Seven Summers takes us on the journey of Liv and Finn, who meet while working at a bar in Cornwall in their early twenties. They are instantly drawn to each other- but it's a classic case of right person, wrong time, as Finn lives in L.A and they each have big plans to start their careers. Things get even further complicated when a tragedy occurs at the end of the summer, strengthening the bond between them even more. As Finn returns to L.A, they make a pact that if they are single the next summer to pick things back up where they left off. And this begins their epic and tumultuous love affair, spanning over the next six summers. But when Liv falls for Tom, a charming tourist who is willing to drop everything to build a life with her in Cornwall, she has to make a choice.

First of all- this is a VERY addicting read. It's been a while since I've had a book that I was reaching for literally every spare second I had. The pacing of the story was perfect, and I loved bouncing back and forth between the past summers and the present. I feel like sometimes alternating timelines can get a little convoluted, but this was executed perfectly. I also looooooved the setting. I felt completely transported to the charming, summery Cornish seaside, which was particularly nice considering I was reading this during the dreary Michigan winter. The characters were all so likable and well developed- you could really feel their struggles. Liv, the protagonist, is one of the most likable and easiest to root for characters I have read in a long time. I found both the love stories to be totally swoony with tons of chemistry- I kept changing my mind on who I wanted her to end up with.

One thing to note- this is most certainly NOT a light, happy, beach read. This is a rip-your-heart-out kind of romance, so plan accordingly ;).

Really, my only gripe with this book was that I would have preferred the ending to have been a bit more fleshed out, rather than crammed into a pretty quick epilogue. After the journey this book took me on, it felt like I needed a bit more closure.

All that to say, I really enjoyed this book and would highly recommend. I am looking forward to reading more from Paige Toon!

Thank you to Netgalley and Penguin Group Putnam for the advanced copy!

I am a huge Paige Toon fan and read all her work that I can get my hands on. After reading so many of her books I begin to wonder if she will run out of material but nope! This one was brand-spanking new and fresh material. She always has a very clever way of getting you connected with the characters early on and moreover, keeping you interested by them throughout the book.

As per usual, I loved the range of characters in this story and found myself sympathising with Liv, the main character, as the book went on. In this romance, Liv initially mets Finn “I don’t know what this thing with Finn is, or where it can go but I’ve never felt so lit up”. And shortly after meeting him, Liv was in for the shock of her life…a massive car pile up 😮 will anyone survive this nasty surprise? As for Liv she felt numb. She knew that sculpting would soothe her soul in the long run but she didn’t want to rush it. Liv has lived with a lot of heart break but with him she finally felt her heart was full.

I absolutely adored the structure of this book. It went back and forth between ‘This summer’ and the previous 6 summers, 1 at a time. It was so simple yet created a very intriguing twist to the story. Plus we were treated to an extended version of an epilogue.

As the book went on Paige does her usual and, she tore my heart apart but very carefully and slowly knitted it back together ❤️‍🩹

What I loved about this book was that as it was coming to a close and you *knew* how it was all going to end very nicely…a bomb was dropped and everything turned on it’s head in the matter of a few words. The book ended how I had always wanted, I just didn’t imagine it would ever happen given the circumstances the plot led us to believe.

This is definitely one of her best works imo.

Apologies for the late and short review but I’m unwell and have very little energy 🤒

No one warned me that this book would absolutely rip my heart to shreds. The story was beautiful, heartbreaking and at many times unpredictable. Not at all your typical Summer Romance as the story bounces between two relationships, one past and one present, and your heart will have no idea who you should be rooting for.

📚Thank you NetGalley and Paige Toon for the ARC of Seven Summers.

As expected by the title, the book goes back and forth between the past and present years of summers. It’s a sweet, charming romance located in England.

Liv is an aspiring artist who’s just returned from sculpture coursework in Italy to her coastal hometown.

Finn is in town from LA to visit his UK family. He’s a singer, songwriter and is filling a spot in his school friends band for a few weeks.

Their story makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time with the prim and proper ways between them and the good old time gentleman ways with the male characters.

It’s a heart breaking story about loss changing the direction and even location of your life.
We can have dreams of where we want to be or go with a career or passion to only be squashed by devastating loss or situations that put us on another path we didn’t imagine.

It's probably been a solid couple hours after I've finished this book and I STILL feel like my heart has been ripped outta my body and repeatedly stomped on, but somehow weirdly still warm and fuzzy? Is that a thing??? This is my first novel I've read by Paige Toon, and now it won't be my last!

I was drawn to this book after reading the description–I do love me a love triangle, and especially when they're done well. Set in multiple timelines, Liv, an aspiring sculptor and lover of her hometown, first meets Finn, an up-and-coming musician/songwriter with a tragic past. Their whirlwind romance has all the aspects you want in an all-consuming first love: excitement, passion, allll the butterflies. However, Finn's career takes him to LA, whereas Liv's life has always been firmly set in her cozy, beachy hometown (honestly if I were her I'd also never want to leave!!).

Six summers pass, and Liv meets Tom. Let me tell you, I immediately fell in love with Finn. He has all the charm you'd want in a MMC, and his chemistry and love for Liv was so captivating, I could NOT imagine someone else strolling right on in and stealing away my heart! But what do ya know, Mr. Tom-maple-brown-eyes did just that!

This was such a beautiful story of the differences in first and second loves–how love itself has layers, and the understanding and maturity that grows as life moves on. It is also a story that alternates between really high-highs, and really low-lows, and isn't afraid to show the grayer sides of a character. And I cannot say I've ever experienced an epilogue like the one in this book, but my GOODNESS.

I will say tears were shed, so a very special thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Group Putnam for sharing this advanced copy with me in exchange for my honest thoughts...and a giant pool of tears.

I’m a huge crime thriller reader, so it’s a rare breed of author whose books can make me deviate from the dark side! Paige Toone is one such author. Seven Summers is a truly beautiful love story, heart-wrenching and heart-warming in equal measure’. It’s a story that will pull at even the most hardened heartstrings mine included! This book should really come with a box of tissues. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Cornish coastline, Paige Toon’s descriptive writing will have you yearning to book a holiday to Cornwall.

Seven Summers tells the story of Liv, who meets Finn, a musician who lives in LA. Liv lives in Cornwall despite their obstacles Finn and Liv agree to meet each summer and if they are both single, they will pick up where they left off. Things become complicated on the sixth summer when Liv meets Tom. The book moves between the present and the past six summers. Multiple timelines can become disjointed or even confuse the reader, but not in Paige Toons’ more than capable hands. She moves flawlessly between timelines.

Liv’s relationship with Finn is a complex one, for much of the year it feels like her life was hold waiting for him to return. Her relationship with Tom felt stable. I loved all the character’s especially Liv’s brother Michael, who stole a piece of my heart. Whilst reading Seven Summers, I experienced a myriad ride of emotions alongside Liv. I really was in two minds who Liv should choose. The thought of either Tom or Flynn being left heartbroken left me in floods of tears. Seven Summers is more than a love story as it explores love, loss, grief, and self-discovery. It’s a profoundly moving book that fans of Paige Toon will devour. Just a few words of advice ‘keep those tissues handy, you’re going to need them’. Highly recommended.

Oh my god this one does not fail to have you hooked from the first page. I am a huge fan of Paige Toon have never not liked a book. Just this is one of the classics. My favourite has been Chasing Daisy and the Johnny stories. This one is top tier with those.

Pulls at your heartstrings. Has you screaming, crying, grieving, falling in love with the characters faults and all. It's sad its beautiful it is tragic it is perfect I love it. I liked reading how Tis the damn season of Taylor Swift influenced this story. The story could be described as a Taylor Swift song for the emotion and the feelings you get. It feels real beautiful setting for excellent characters. I love the mention of p!nk songs too. Two of my favourite music artists.

It's going to stay with me. Would make an excellent film, TV series it is that good. I felt the pull towards Finn from the off. I love Liv ad fabulous leading lady who is comfortable in her own skin at her lowest at her best. The characters are so mature it makes a difference. It makes them stand out it is a very good factor to the book.

I felt a pull towards Finn then I knew it was going to happen for Tom. I knew I was going to love him too up until he is gone. You would still never forget him like you could never forget Finn. It was the perfect timing to give the relationship with Finn a chance a go with no regrets. Finn and Tom are there for Liv when needed give the space this heroine needs and wants.

I was rooting for Tom however thinking unfinished business with Finn. What they shared in those summers what they share again. You do not unlive that with a person. I love it. It swaps back to Finn in the most tragic way and you feel his pain while loving him reaching out to Liv.

It's the most perfect of read and the fastest in a long time. I was so hooked. It is going to stay with me. One of the best reads ever.

Seven Summers is a heart wrenching contemporary romance from Paige Toon about love, loss, family, and fate.

The summer Liv meets Finn, tragedy binds them, and then tears them apart. Liv’s life is in Cornwall where she tends bar, creates sculptures, and watches over her brother. Finn’s life is in LA where his career as a singer/songwriter is taking flight. Forced to part as the season turns, the lovers make a solemn vow, if they are both single when Finn returns a year from now, they will renew their romance, setting the scene for a love story seven years in the making.

Moving between the present day and the tumultuous events of the six previous summers, Seven Summers is an emotional journey that charts the course of Liv and Finn’s relationship. Toon elicits smiles as the couple make the most of the time they are together, and tears each time they part. Their romance is passionate, sweet, and all-consuming, and I was wholly invested in it. But eventually something has to change and when Liv meets Tom, she is forced to make a choice. To Toon’s credit, Liv and Tom’s relationship is equally as compelling, and ultimately as heartrending. It’s a unique twist on a love triangle trope that makes a statement about soul mates and second chances.

While Seven Summers is a romance at its core, it’s also much more than just that. In some ways it’s a coming of age story, as Liv is only just in her twenties when the story begins, and as a consequence of her loss, she gives up on her plans and becomes sort of stuck. With the immediacy of the first person perspective, the narrative is quite intimate so that the reader shares in Liv’s journey as she navigates her grief, guilt and yearning.

Poignant, wistful and hopeful, Seven Summers is another heartfelt novel that will give you all the feels.

This book was the most heartfelt, honest and divine romance read I think I have ever read.

I honestly cannot put together the words to describe how much I adored reading this novel. Through the characters of Finn and Olivia, it was clear there was unrequited love and the way in which this relationship was explored was mesmerising.

I find with some novels, the type of love explored can appear unrealistic or simply confusing but this was the most beautiful portrayal of people feeling drawn to each other, even if they are not necessarily sure on the feelings involved.

The exploration of other challenging themes, such as how loss and grief can impact relationships, really resonated with me and provided another dimension to the narrative. I loved how, although it was a romance novel, the portrayal of these themes really bought the story to life and made it feel like I was involved in a true story.

Tom had my heart from the first moment we met him and to see Olivia recognise how being in love should feel like was a blissful moment in this book, and probably my most favourite. The comments surrounding love feeling different depending on the person and that it doesn't mean he is loved any less or more was really moving and I just feel like I have come out of this novel a totally new woman!

Honestly, utterly the best romance read that has ever graced this Earth.

Thank you so much Penguin and Netgalley for the early copy of this book!

This book. I genuinely binged this book in a day because I was so engrossed and wanted to see how it was going to end. It was very Emily Henry-esque and gave me major One True Love vibes by Taylor Jenkins Reid. It is captivating nature and ability to tug on the heart-strings for chapters upon chapters. At first I was like I'm not really invested but the minute things started to go not the way I wanted I was ready to launch my kindle across the room. I was screaming you can't make two people fall in love epically and then destroy it. I was in tears because I didn't want what was happening to happen.

Then 15 pages later, I was accepting it because it was what was meant to happen and it made me happy. The way that epilogue was written was to perfection, it was like yeah that happened you probably don't like me that much but I promise it will all make sense and work out, and it did. Everything that happened meant to.

I fluctuated with my rating for this book because at the point of not feeling invested it was like a 3.5, then when it wasn't going my way it was like a 1 but once everything resolved I couldn't decide. I think the books that make you hate them, love them and care for them all at the same time, is an incredible book.

I fell in love with Finn and Liv and Tom, I loved them all, this book had my heart, broke it, destroyed it some more and then pieced it back together with that epilogue <3

This is my second book by Paige Toon and she sure knows how to make love hurt in the best of ways.

The premise of this book drew me in and I feel like it really delivered. We journey with Liv through happiness and grief. Throughout the story we experience her highs and lows. I feel like Paige Toon painted a realistic picture of life after experiencing such trauma. I enjoyed the then/now set up of the book. Counting down the summers to current time really pulled on the heart strings. I felt as though the epilogue was a little disjointed from the story, though. I felt like much of it could have been flushed out and added to the actual story given the information we were provided. It felt rushed to provide us what I considered crucial information for emotional impact.

There is so much to this story that I loved. Michael's relationship with his sister/family/friends was so enjoyable. I loved his fierce independence and the way that he looked after his little sister. I loved that Liv had an entire support system to help he through her grief. Liv and Finn are basically trauma bonded and I loved how realistic this was portrayed. I loved seeing Liv learn how to let go and move forward instead of continually sitting with ghosts. I loved that Liv was able to realize that Finn wasn't the only problem in their relationship. And I loved Tom.

To be quite fair, I would have been 100% satisfied with the ending where she chose Tom. It's not that I didn't love Finn, but the whole right person - wrong time was done so beautifully even though heartbreaking. I did enjoy that Liv and Finn found their way back to one another after she had lived happily with her choice of choosing Tom. But that is where the epilogue let me down because it felt so rushed and so short in comparison to their long and harrowing journey back to each other - and maybe that's how it was supposed to be. But something here was missing for me.

I still adored this book and will recommend to all my readers that love a good emotional gut punch.

"Six summers to fall in love. One summer to change everything."
I don't think I have the words to describe how much I loved this book. I absolutely devoured it. I loved both Finn and Liv. I loved all of the characters. The setting was also perfect. Paige Toon does a great job writing with an atmospheric description without it being too much detail.
If you're a Normal People lover, this book gave me similar vibes.
I totally see this being a huge release this summer. Such an amazing beach read.
Releases March 26, so preorder this one now!

I would give this book 100 stars if I could! It is such a beautiful but heartbreaking love story and I really had no idea how it would end or how I wanted it to end but as usual Paige Toon gave us the perfect ending. 🥰💞

Seven Summers is a highly emotional romance about impossible choices, love, and growth.

Told from the past and present, Seven Summers follows Liv and Finn as they fall for each other, but are separated at the end of each summer with a promise to spend next summer together if they’re both still single.

I enjoyed the alternating timelines with the present informing readers to guard their hearts as Liv and Finn are estranged. As much as I enjoyed the alternating timelines, I wish Toon would have spent more time in the past chapters. Liv and Finn are supposed to have an all-consuming romance that allows them to wait for each other. While I did feel their chemistry and tension, there wasn’t enough of it. Admittedly, their story is gut wrenching however it could have been devastating.

The ending was rushed. The epilogue read like Toon wanted to finish writing as quickly as possible and get Liv to a specific ending.

Spoilers:

Spice level: fade to black

Overall, Seven Summers had the potential to be an all-consuming and devastating romance, but missed the mark by not spending enough time developing the relationship.

This book is so beautiful and heart-wrenching. There’s so much depth to each of the characters and I fell in love with every single one! The way she handled and described Liv’s grief was beautifully written throughout. I had a really hard time putting it down and the ending was such an emotional rollercoaster. Overall, highly recommend checking it out! I’m so excited to read more by Paige Toon .

Thanks NetGalley and Paige Toon for this ARC for review.

Unfortunately, the pacing was a little too slow for me. I found myself having to force myself to pick this up. It wasn’t a bad book, but it was just too slow for my liking and it didn’t catch my eye until 75% in. It also really bothered me that there wasn’t enough time with Tom. I would have liked if Tom was end-game for Liv. She seemed much happier and didn’t seem to constantly doubt their relationship in comparison to her and Finn’s.

Okay, so after reading this, I am almost ashamed to admit that I haven't read any Paige Toon books before. There is no specific reason, other than I have had so many others to read, that I haven't got round to reading them.
However, and it's a big however, I shall be hunting down her back catalogue after reading Seven Summers.
Talk about an author putting you through the rinse cycle about a MILLION times!
The story centres around Liv, a young woman living in St Agnes, Cornwall. She has come back after her studies, fully ready to embrace the life of a hopefully full-time sculptor.
She meets Finn, an acquaintance from secondary school, and they hit it off. Thing is, they want very different things from life, and though they are perfect for one another, there are many reasons why they can't be in the same place all the time.
Both characters have tragedy etched in their souls that they support one another with, but equally, both have responsibilities and dreams that tear them apart.
Over six years, they are drawn together like magnets each summer, then pulled apart.
Except on the seventh, when Liv meets a stranger, Tom, who looks set to break this cycle of not quite toxic but unhealthy and unmanageable emotion.
I really don't want to reiterate the story in this review, but I will say that I highly recommend reading this book.
Yes, there is loss, and yes, there are struggles, but there is genuine happiness and love, too.
Be ready to have your heart quivering with anticipation as it sings, then cries with heartbreak, only to rise again before a fall and then come full circle again to happiness.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Random House, UK, for an ARC.

I was warned by Rachel at Century that I would need tissues for this one, and damn did I?! I lost count of how much time I spent sobbing from reading this bloody beautiful book. I spent most of my time rooting for Finn and Liv to sort their shit out and take that plunge into a relationship, that was until I got to know Tom better and then I had no idea who would be “best” for poor Liv. For a hot minute I ended up adoring Tom a teeny tiny bit more than I did Finn, but ultimately I was drawn back to Finn because WHO WOULDN’T BE?! Also, I was biased because if I can’t have Liv with Elliot then I’ll take her with Finn (SVU fans get that). But back to the actual characters in the book and not one of my favourite shows, I wanted Liv with both of them for different reasons.

Romance aside (sorry, sorry) the cherry on the cake for this one was getting to see Liv’s character growth throughout all those damn summers, that woman handles her grief better than I can hold a pen, and not to mention the way she handles her heart between two men. That damn epilogue made my entire LIFE right, even if I did shed more tears than I would chopping an onion. All I wanted was for Liv to have her happily ever after with someone that loves her and she bloody got it, she got her family. I’m not sure I’ll recover from this one as quickly as I’d like but damn if I didn’t love every single second I was engrossed in the pages.

I’ve only read a few other works by this author and I think it’s time I go back and read her entire catalogue, even if I know I’ll probably just cry even more. But first I have to pick up my shattered heart from the floor. Thanks Paige.

Thank you so much to century / delrey for sending me a proof of this emotional rollercoaster of a book.

Thank you to PRH Audio and Putnam Books for an ALC and an ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A new author for me.
I went in blind. I had no idea what I was in for. It’s an emotional read between Liv and Finn and Liv and Tom.

Liv reconnected with Finn six summers ago in England. They developed a relationship and tragic event brings them even closer. Finn has to return to Los Angeles at the end of the summer, but he says that he will return. If they are both single they will renew their romance.

Meanwhile, present summer Liv meets an interesting stranger/tenant, Tom.

Then we go back to five summers ago when Finn returns. And then to the fourth, third and second summer. This is all intermixed with present summer chapters. I’m usually not a fan of back and forth timelines, but this worked as I was equally absorbed into both stories. I had a guess of who Liv would end up with, but had no idea how emotional it would turn out to be.
