U.S. News & World Report has released its list of the best U.S. high schools, and one local school was recognized as one of the state's top schools.

Of 705 Ohio schools that were evaluated, Columbus Alternative High School was ranked number 16 for the state of Ohio and number 5 for the Central Ohio region.

Factors that went into the evaluation included college readiness, graduation rates, state assessment proficiency and performance, college curriculum breadth, and performace of underserved students.

"We have been honored to receive the U.S. News recognition for over 10 years," CAHS principal Dr. Darryl Sanders said in a media release. "CAHS’ success can be attributed to a dedicated, competent faculty, supportive parent community, and students who actualize the CAHS motto: CAHS, where Excellence is our standard and not the exception.”

Nationally, CAHS was ranked number 510 of the 25,000 schools evaluated across the U.S.

In addition to CAHS, other high schools within Columbus City Schools which were ranked highly included Centennial, Whetstone, Fort Hayes, and Columbus International. All five were also on the 2023 list.

"In receiving recognition from U.S. News & World Report, our schools stand as a testament to the dedication of our staff and students in preparing for success within and beyond the classroom," Columbus City Schools Superintendent Dr. Angela Chapman said.
