Which artist do you think you would manage successfully?

[DISCUSSION]

Hi, I hope this kind of post is allowed because I often find myself thinking about how I feel I would handle some artists' PR and promotion of music better than their actual teams. So I want to hear do others have similar thoughts. Is there any artist in particular you think you could give more popularity to?

I think I'd do a good job with Justin Bieber (provided he is on board, which I don't think would be the case). As we all know, he had a huge peak twice (My worlds and Purpose era), but lately is very chill and away from it all as much as he can. However, if he were to start a new era, here is how I would do it:

  1. Style change. He seem to had more interest in fashion in 2020/2021, I really like this vibe from him, from clothes to hair. I think this style appeals more to younger audience who he needs to attract since they weren't really around for his active moments.

  2. Expanding on USA market. Billboard reportes that only 29% of his music consumption comes from USA. As a huge achievement that is to have such global popularity, USA is the biggest market and all the awards and charts are centered around it. More appearances on American based media formats like late night shows, GMA, but also just more interviews overall (like Hot Ones).

  3. Vinyl sales. Vinyl are more popular than ever, but they do require a dedicated fanbase or music lovers who will have no problem with giving their money for vinyl. But a big thing about vinyl nowadays is they're used for aesthetic. His album covers since Purpose haven't been the best, so making sure the album cover looks nice on a vinyl would also be a focus for the new release.

  4. Communication with fans. This one gets tricky because fans are often invasive and in his case a lot of them treat him and Hailey horribly. However, his social media are a desert. Just links, nothing personal ever. Even the tour cancellation announcement didn't come straight from him. People find it hard to connect with artist like that so they won't be invested as fans who think they have a relationship with their faves are. (Disclaimer: I'm very against cult-like parasocial relationships, I mean communication like Harry Styles way, not Taylor or Nicki way)

  5. Nostalgia factor. Justin had some huge hits in the past that were marked with his baby voice. Any time he sings Baby or Never say never, people lose it and ask for a re-recording of it with his adult voice. I think studio rendition of them with his current voice could be a good way to tease new era.

  6. New collaborators. Both in writing music and featuring on it. He seems to have found people with whom he likes to work, but it stifles artistic growth. I'd love to see him work with popular producers like Max Martin and even Timbaland (provided they try to create that 2000s sound). Also, move collaborations from same people over and over again like Travis Scott or Big Sean to more female collaborators like SZA, Megan, Tyla, Ariana, even Sabrina.

I could ramble about this for on and on, but these are some things I thought about.

Your thoughts on all this?

Rihanna... I would manage her successfully by locking her in the studio. She can earn five minutes outside every day for each song she completes.

u/romeoomustdie avatar

This woman hasn't released a major contemporary song yet she's top ,7 streamed artist of Spotify

She was in the 20s originally but she's been comfortably sitting in the Top 5 since the Super Bowl. The halftime really woke people up to how strong her catalog is, and her stuff is super nostalgic and iconic for an entire generation. They play her bangers at clubs every single night. It clearly wasn't just a case of Super Bowl hype, since her songs have remained stable and popular for this long with zero promotional effort.

u/romeoomustdie avatar

Amazing she has best catalogue of present artists that really is a achievement

u/Useuless avatar

I'm glad she decided to change her stance after exposing the corruption of the halftime show

I don’t think I will do a particular good job managing any of them but if I was Miley Cyrus’s manger I will convince her to make a rock album (like Plastic Heart but even more rockier) country rock album or a synth funk album.

Plastic hearts remains so far her best album

Miley and Demi should stick to those two styles as a brand and make dance gay pop (not the S*wa kind) when people get bored, but always go back to their home. Holy Fuck/Revamped and Plastic Hearts are their best albums

I don’t pay attention to Justin or his music for the most part but a collaboration with Tyla would be fun

why would that eat so hard actually

Nicki Minaj... I would manage her successfully by deleting all her social media and shipping her off to the Himalayas to shave her head, become a monk, and find peace.

u/Any-Equivalent-3915 avatar

mama kudos for saying this, I’m obsessed with the visual.

Nicki desperately needs to do some heavy duty yoga and connect with her Indian roots.

u/Any-Equivalent-3915 avatar

yeah the first thing I think of when I see Nicki going on a Twitter spiral is “damn girl you need to a downward dog NOW.”

that would fix all her issues. like every single one.

Edited

Yeah exactly, her baby daddy's knockoff kama sutra has scrambled her mental stability... she just needs to climb the mountains, find some good butter chicken, and do some intense breathing exercises to get her sanity back.

I need her shipped to a digital detox wellness retreat in Trinidad for like 3 months and we will absolutely get some bangers.

u/SupremeElect avatar

her tour was iconic, though!! 😩💖✨

Yeah honestly she did a good job with that. I was expecting it to be a steaming hot mess and for Nicki to be as deranged as ever but she somehow appeared very professional and the show was not bad. I don't think anyone was expecting that after she made a complete ass of herself during the Megan livestreams.

I'm weird and so are all the 338 people who upvoted this comment, and Barbz and Nicki are the normal ones, not weird in the slightest. You're right.

I would manage Alessia Cara, create a Time Machine and travel back to 2016 and submit her work to the Grammys for the 2017 Grammys instead of 2018’s so SZA stans don’t bully her and make her shy away from the spotlight.

I would leave her music completely untouched because it’s amazing, but I would convince her to stop wearing the oversized suit for every performance (I totally got what she was going for but people didn’t resonate with it) and only have her wear it for the Growing Pains music video and album cover (she doesn’t even wear it in the video for some reason).

I would also have her lean more into her intellectual side in interviews because I feel like she avoids showing how smart she really is for some reason.

Oh and I would make her release Growing Pains in 2017 instead of 2018, because then the hype of her winning BNA would actually carry over to the song instead of “omg she beat SZA” IT’S NOT HER FAULT OKAY 😭

u/thisisdvmi avatar

Yes to all of this!!!

I always HATED how much flack she got for that. Like yeah, the academy dropped the ball there but that wasn’t her fault. I hate how she couldn’t even properly celebrate her Grammy

Doja Cat - Would lock her out of her socials. Would make her next album neo soul or rock and keep it to 12 tracks max. I know she has a classic album in her, she just needs to edit them better.

Normani - She'd have released an album by now and it would have been pop

J Lo - I would have pulled the plug on the documentary and film. Her tour would have been at smaller venues, cheaper tickets and marketed as a farewell tour. The music...I don't think I'd have been able to help her there

I think the Doja one is exactly what’s happening.

u/Useuless avatar

Doja's social media isn't really just her social media though.

How do we know her meltdowns and "shocking" posts aren't intentionally crafted that way to build hype? It's no different than an advertisement that gets you to pay attention to something with the same kind of antics, the difference is that she does it on her supposed authentic social media accounts.

Doja eluded to having a mental illness that she doesn’t want to publicly discuss. A lot of her behaviour matches the symptoms of bipolar or borderline PDs.

TBH nothing she does is really all that offensive. All of her lashing out seems more like a mild cry for help/attention. She may be intentionally fishing for negative comments so she has an excuse to freak out, like people with BPDs often do.

Just let her live her life and don’t feed her negativity. Give her space to heal.

I believe I could help Sky Ferreira release her second album and prevent her from being more than 30mins late to her concerts. Help me achieve my dream!

Nope. I had to suffer through waiting for 1+ hours for a 30min set so ya’ll have to share mah pain.

More replies

I’d make Azealia Banks go on an apology tour. Nobody that’s that unhinged and offensive could still have such a dedicated fanbase and audience unless the star power and music was that good.

I’d make her get in with a (planted) therapist, and make the therapist apart of her album rollout, there every step of the way. Even attention seeking things like right next to her as she’s performing, kind of like training wheels.

I’d make it a series where each week she apologized to a different celeb, leading up to her album release.

That series is gonna last 11 whole ass seasons + 3 holiday specials and a tell-all starring Andy Cohen and we’ll still get an album before R9

i fucking love this sub 💀

Dua Lipa

I will build her a cult fanbase like ( Charli's, CRJ, Lorde, Lana, and Sky Ferrera)

Doja cat - would get her off social media entirely.

Chloe x Halle - would promote them more and reunite them for a third album.

Tinashe. I would make her a fucking STAR. WITH the creative vision that her label tried to make her lose.

I would sent her to Korea for live stages every comeback + upgrade her album packaging

Right the star power is there, she just needs better marketing material because the creative vision is lacking a bit and isn't as cohesive outside of the MVs.

When you say “star” how big are we talking

Doja Cat or SZA level (if we’re being realistic)

Katy Perry.

I would start in the Prism era. Add convince her that since the fans voted for it, dark horse would be the official second single off the album. I would make the third single walking on air with an ancient Greek god themed up in the sky lol. Legendary Lovers would be next and close out the era with one of the second half of the album tracks.

I feel like this is where people started to lose or pigeon hole as a campy unserious pop artist. The singles, I mention do a good job of retaining her big pop sound while showing that she can mature.

A Taylor Clapback track would need to happen pretty immediately after bad blood. But I would’ve avoided it all together. I would’ve released KP5 in the late 2015 early 2016 before the massive shift in the industry.

She could take a break between 2016 and 2020 if she had to, but I’d come back with Never Really Over and Harleys in Hawaii and make a massive statement

u/BadrBombaker avatar

Or you could have just stopped her from going bleached blond with short hair and she wouldn’t have lost all those fans in a blink.

I think the majority of people with functioning ears would have managed Taylor Swifts lover era better. Me! and YNTCD as lead singles while completely ignoring Cruel Summer still keeps me up at night at how baffling that decision making was

u/WeRoastURoastWithUs avatar

Taylor Swift has the worst taste in her own music.

u/SupremeElect avatar

ME! and YNTCD as Taylor Swift songs in general was a horrible decision. Lock those songs up and make sure they never see the light of day!! 😩💖✨✨

This!! I'm still baffled on how YNTCD and ME! is a part of the album and not "Need" or "All of the girls you've loved before". How?!?

u/Starfire-Galaxy avatar

I feel that ME! should've been a hidden gem rather than a lead single. It's a bouncy, light enough song that fits the bubblegum pink colors of the era.

u/ikea_supremacy avatar

ME! should've had an acoustic version as well. Just Taylor and a guitar. Would've brought some attention to how lovely the lyrics are, as well as letting that bubblegum-vibe linger.

Hozier bc there's no way I can do worse than his current management/promotion team

u/SublimeLime1 avatar

Katy Perry.

  • Get her off American Idol indefinitely.

  • Fully rebrand this new era as the antithesis of her usual campy and zany style; this era is sexy, sleek.

  • The lead single is more in the lane of when i’m gone/harleys in hawaii and is pushed on socials.

  • Attract more engagement on socials like tiktok.

Agree!!

u/romeoomustdie avatar

You can't launch her her songs are bubble gum they are never meant for mature audience

u/SublimeLime1 avatar

disagree. her fan base who followed her teenage dream and prism eras are adults now. Her underage fanbase is likely small. I think she needs to switch it up, if she sticks to the camp it’ll not fare well.

u/romeoomustdie avatar

That's what I mean her audience is mature they don't listen to her cus of bubble gum

Give me Demi Lovato

  • growing her hair out. long jet black extensions with a bang

  • ditch the metal sound bring her back to a pop girl

  • Confident 2.0

  • Summer, Hot, Rock Pop. Leather, Demin,

  • Aiming for at least a top ten hit

  • “PR Stunts” dress up as poot to a red carpet, or run a yogurt shop for a day

  • Attempt to mend her relationship with Selena Gomez/Jonas Brother and get a collab but make it an album track. Not a single. if not that at least get Selena and Demi to get lunch together and post it on IG

  • I want her in the studio with Dan Nigro. Show people what Olivia Rodrigo would sound like with Demi‘s voice

*at the current moment I see that her pronouns are She/Her.

I’m sorry but what metal sound??? She’s been pop rock for years and never deviating lol.

u/zandeye avatar

she just did two albums that were full rock. absolutely zero pop to them

with me Demi’s is going back to commercial pop. Cool For the Summer type sound. but I’d alsl get her in the studio with Dan Nigro and give a boygenius vibe on the album itself

I mean genres are kind of bullshit semantics when including sub-genres, but I would not classify what Demi did as full rock at all. It was still closer to All Time Low than Metallica imo. I guess punk is a better label?

I think Demi’s home is rock/pop rock/punk but she does really well with pop too! I think Adele, Sia, Demi, Miley and Ariana have the type of voices where they could always go back to pop/dance every few albums. This is me starting my Adele dance/europop campaign lol.

u/zandeye avatar

Demi’s release were literally marketed by herself as “death to her pop music

I don’t think these are subgenres. Demi did commercial pop music before. Her newest albums ditched that sound for rock. I’m talking about the Revamped and Holy Fvck . These are not pop albums

The Selena/Jonas thing might be tricky. If those bridges are burned, they’re that way for a reason. Also it’s kinda weird when managers meddle in their artist’s personal affairs. That was the big issue with Scooter and his clients iirc

u/diselegit avatar

Why not make it a single tho?

u/zandeye avatar

because there’ll be too much pressure if it’s a lead single. That’s why the Miley, Ariana and Lana collab failed. It was too over hyped. Everyone had high expectations

But releasing the collab as album track will give people a reason to be excited for the album. And will make people excited for the release date which will boost the lead single sales and the collab

And if the collab sucks it will be okay because it’s just an album track. it will still chart on billboard regard. Ideally one top ten lead single and then the Selena & Demi collab as a safe top 50 album track

"I want her in the studio with Dan Nigro. Show people what Olivia Rodrigo would sound like with Demi‘s voice"

I need a Demi cover of So American now.

Burying the hatchet with Selena isn’t the worst idea, but I’d stay away from the Jo Broes, Joe’s divorce drama is not something she should be a part of unless Demi follows Taylor’s suit and parties with Sophie Turner.

As for ditching rock, it makes me sad, I think Holy Fvck is some of their best material. But the GP has basically said “no thank you, please stick to pop”. So I suggest a compromise- Demi should go back to pop/R&B on her terms and form a rock/metal band as a side project. I recall Todd in the Shadows recently saying that he could see Demi front the Pretty Reckless in another life and he’s not wrong. Let Demi cultivate her gifts elsewhere and earn that top 40 bread again.

yeah, holy fvck is amazing. imo eat me is one of the coolest, most poignant statements from a former teen pop girl / former child star ever. we eat these people up and watch their catastrophes and rarely do they ever live long enough or stop craving public approval enough to say: i'm a human being and i don't need you.

I see the vision outside her disney peers but yes popvato needs to make a comeback

Demi's pronouns are they/them/she/her, not just she/her

I’m not sure you understand what managers are supposed to do… you can’t force a person to cut their hair a certain way, change their pronouns, or make a certain type of music.

You’re just the manager not a slave master. Serious sociopath vibes you’re giving there.

Nobody is changing Demi’s pronouns, she has stated that she’s using she/her now.

Bebe Rexha. I would help her get the fuck out of her record contract or push the envelope so they finally released the rock album that she has been dreaming of for over 10 years now.

u/medusaOP500 avatar

I think I would do a good job managing Dua Lipa! Her unreleased and leaked catalogs has so many bangers and absolute potential bops idk who's making the decisions to keep these off the final cut of the album!??! And the whole album rollouts need a lot of changes too like radical optimism has been kinda messy. If this album was really ready... she should have released it in 2023 instead of releasing it in 2024 which is already very cluttered with releases from many big names. Also her songs/albums get leaked pretty easily so ensure to have a fool-proof system there lol. And lastly, creating a fanbase and buzz around her releases.

Britney

By choosing better singles.

Hilary duff she lost and doesn’t realize her full potential

I dare somebody to pickup Azealia Banks as a client and try to give her the successful career she could’ve have if it weren’t for the choices she’s made lmao. This will be the ultimate managerial skills test. 🤣

u/Starfire-Galaxy avatar

Lana del Rey

  • Smaller venues will be her signature concert choice.

  • Record and release covers of 50's-60's music. Allow her to truly embrace those decades' visual aesthetics.

  • Set up at least one collaboration with Kate Bush and push it onto Adult Contemporary radio.

  • Re-cast her as Priscilla Presley in the 2023 movie.

why would a 38yo woman play 14yo Priscilla

That smaller wouldn’t work. I’m a fan and I remember that 2,5k venue she had that have a 50k people in cue. She’s just too big for that. In my opinion, I would make her the artist who doesn’t tour and only release albums and musics.

Why don't you want her to tour? Is it performance nerves?

u/badboyleleo avatar

Oh I would manage the fuck out of Katy Perry

u/badanimal87 avatar

Ava Max. I couldn’t do any worse than her current management.

Scooter should take some notes

He isn't jb's manager anymore!

He still is, the reports of them parting ways hold as much water as justin’s divorce rumors
