Emma Goldberg

I have been writing about the culture of the workplace since 2021. I have written about generational shifts in the workplace, hybrid work, artificial intelligence and how workers’ lives are transforming in a moment of social and technological change.

I have interviewed hundreds of workers and executives across many industries and cities. I write about everything from tech companies to call centers, fast food restaurants to hospitals and everywhere in between. I occasionally also contribute stories on cultural trends, faith, books and other topics.

Before becoming a business reporter, I wrote about medicine for The Times, while also working as a researcher and fact checker. My reporting on medicine during the pandemic won the Newswomen’s Club of New York’s Best New Journalist Award and the New York Press Club’s Nellie Bly Award. My Times investigation into abuse at New York’s Human Resources Administration, with Mara Gay, won the Sidney Hillman Foundation’s Sidney Award.

I have a bachelor’s degree in political science from Yale University and a master’s in gender studies from the University of Cambridge. I am the author of “Life on the Line: Young Doctors Come of Age in a Pandemic.”

The Times has strict ethical standards, which is what makes me proud to work here. All Times journalists are committed to upholding the standards of integrity outlined in our Ethical Journalism Handbook. I do not accept money, gifts or favors from people or companies I cover. I identify myself as a Times reporter, respect confidential sourcing and agree at the start of a conversation whether I’m speaking to a source on the record, on background or a different designation.

I am careful to protect my sources. I strive to reflect what sources tell me in a way that is fair and accurate. I do not turn away from tough stories, and I give my subjects a chance to share their side of the story.
