Product Description

A DATE FOR MAD MARY tells the story of ‘Mad’ Mary McArdle returning to her small Irish home town after a short spell in prison – for something she’d rather forget. But everything and everyone seems different. Her best friend, Charlene, is about to get married and Mary is maid of honor. When Charlene refuses Mary a ‘plus one’ on the grounds that she probably couldn’t find a date, Mary becomes determined to prove her wrong. Her attempts at dating are a disaster and she winds up feeling more alone… until she meets Jess – the lesbian wedding photographer – and everything changes. It is a tough and tender story about friendship, first love, and letting go of the glory days, starring Seána Kerslake (Can’t Cope/Won’t Cope, The Lobster), Tara Lee (Raw, The Fall) and Charleigh Bailey.

Review

Instantly lovable ... beautifully performed, warm yet melancholic. --Variety

When the film swings onto Kerslake s confused features, or Lee s wistful performances, all the script s love and longing come alive. Mad Mary is a special girl indeed. --Screen Daily

The young Irish actress (Seána Kerslake) blossoms in the care of Darren Thornton s simple, lovable but oh-so-slightly barbed directorial debut. --The Guardian

I wasn't sure about this movie based on the title and then reading that the main character had been released from prison. I thought it might be dark and heavy but it is so sweet and authentic. I thought Mary was totally lovable in her own way and it is was funny and cute and heart-warningly bittersweet. I wish I had watched it sooner.

I was expecting a little more. Still its not a bad movie. Possible spoilers: when you get sent away to slam for 6 months for hurting someone in a night club, you might have a problem with booze and should steer clear. So Mary gets out of the slammer and at first we see her acting in a way that is typical of people who have been in jail for a while, such as in your face blunt talk, etc. But as time goes on, one wonders, is her attitude the result of being in the slam or is it her? I honestly think she is or was a young woman with issues. I also think she is a closet lesbian (she even makes out with the wedding videograpgher who is a woman) and she keeps stating "things you need to know about charlene..." (her friend who is getting married and she is supposed to be bridesmaid for) and its clear she feels something for Charlene and can't stand the groom. So the title "Mad Mary" is very fitting. The girl gets the best advice possible from her mom "get off your high horse or you will end up a very lonely girl." Still have a bit of the movie left and I do hope she gets off her horse.

The language and content may be offensive to some.
“Mad Mary” has some issues. The early question is, does she refuse to address her issues or is she blind to them? The film begins with Mary being released from prison after serving a six-month sentence for attacking and, apparently, disfiguring someone. She expects her best friend to be ready to go out partying, but she encounters the first of many disappointments to come. The film is about those disappointments. She doesn’t handle them well, especially at first, but by the end of the film there seems to be a glimmer of hope that Mary may be ready to put her anger aside and move forward. The movie has good production values and good acting. The Irish accent and idiom were delightful but not easy for me to understand, so I did a good bit of backing up to catch what had been said.

i found this incredibly relatable in the most surprising ways, the cinematography is perfect, and best of all I had *no idea* this would be an LGBTQ+ story and was overjoyed when I realized that's where the plot was heading.

I never felt anything for Mary. She was a bully, manipulating & sad person with a poor demeanor that would put anyone off. I wasted my time watching this pathetic movie.

I thought at first it was going to be a comedy, and it had moments. I was unable to go to Ireland this year 2020, so I was looking forward to watching this movie for that aspect too. There was not enough storyline to explain behaviors. Seeing into life before her friends marriage, her childhood etc., or about the person she attacked. I was so disappointed I wasted my time watching this.

Mary is mad. Maybe in both senses of the word, and the cause is left a little ambiguous. Not sure she is supposed to be likable but I don't think its a spoiler to say you find yourself rooting for her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Gritty Drama
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 28, 2021
Mary McArdle (excellently played by Seána Kerslake) has spent 6 months in prison after a fight. She returns home in time for her best friend’s wedding, but her family and friends have moved on; they do not seem that bothered that she is back, and are worried about what she might do next, perhaps continuing the wild behaviour that led to her being known as ‘Mad’ Mary. The start is bleak – her grandmother showing no interest when Mary arrives back at the house, Mary having to clear out stuff from her room that has been used as storage in her absence, and her best friend too busy with wedding preparations to meet her for a drink. Mary goes out to celebrate on her own only to be refused entry from a nightclub, due to an incident in the queue which is clearly typical of her past behaviour. Trying to carry out her wedding preparation duties and find a date for the wedding (as she is unhappy in her best friends’ assessment that she has not got one) it becomes clear that the relationship with her best friend, who is focussed on having a perfect wedding, and now seems to avoid her company, has changed. This is not helped by her volatility. Her attempts to find a date led to some amusing moments and her meeting with Jess who has been hired to do the wedding video is a brilliant scene. While in some places this is slightly uncomfortable as Mary continues with some of the self-destructive behaviour that got her into trouble before, there is a growing relationship with Jess, and you get to see if Mary can herself change. All in all, a great drama with some humorous moments that I will watch again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Piece of film making from Ireland

Mary McArdle has just been released from prison after doing time for a violent crime. On her release she goes home to Drogheda where she can’t wait to catch up with her best friend Charlene. But Charlene is getting married and despite having Mary as ‘Maid of Honour’ she seems heavily reluctant to hang out with her erstwhile closest friend.

What is worse Mary has not even got a ‘plus one’ on the Wedding invite as she has no boyfriend. So she sets out to get herself a date and then by dint of force of character make them join her for the Wedding. Seems like a simple plan but we all know what happens to the best laid plans, and in that department Mary is no exception.

Now this is a comedy drama and it deals with real life issues, often in an unflinching way but this is brilliantly juxtaposed with some razor sharp comedy and moments of wit that border on being genius. Seana Kerslake as ‘Mad’ Mary is perfect for the role and bodes well for more to come in her career. The entire cast though are spot on and the Grandmother gets two of the best lines, so the fun is spread round.

It is directed by Darren Thornton who co wrote it with Colin Thornton and I think they should be very proud of such an unassuming film that packs such a big cinematic punch. This is a film I can recommend all day long.
