Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay is likely to ‘leave in the summer’ after falling down the pecking order, CBS reporter Ben Jacobs has told GiveMeSport.

The 26-year-old was linked with a move away from Old Trafford during the January transfer window and could finally seek pastures new following the conclusion of the current campaign.

Manchester United news – Scott McTominay

In the middle of January, The Telegraph claimed that Newcastle had ‘expressed an interest’ in McTominay after learning of the player’s concerns over his game time.

It was also stated that the Scotland international is ‘widely liked’ by the Magpies’ management team and that they were set to bid for him if they were given any encouragement to do so from his current employers.

McTominay himself was also said to be ‘open to moving to St James’ Park’, but a formal offer failed to materialise and he ended up staying put during the winter.

However, with Casemiro and Christian Eriksen now established at the first-choice central midfield pairing at United, the academy graduate may be forced to depart his boyhood club in search of regular game time.

McTominay’s contract is not due to expire until 2025, and United also have the option to extend his stay by a further 12 months, leaving them in a strong position around the negotiating table.

What has Jacobs said about McTominay?

Jacobs has disclosed that an Old Trafford exit is firmly on the cards for McTominay and confirmed that ‘Newcastle were interested’ in him during the recent window.

In an interview with GMS, he said: “What we do know about Manchester United is that Scott McTominay will, in all likelihood, leave in the summer, and Newcastle were interested.

“So, they may look to make some kind of central midfield reinforcement.”

How well has McTominay been playing?

McTominay initially appeared to be central to Erik ten Hag’s plans, starting six of United’s seven opening Premier League games of the season.

However, the 6 foot 4 ace was hauled off just before the hour mark as the 20-time English champions were thrashed 6-3 by local rivals Manchester City on October 2 and was replaced by Casemiro.

McTominay then failed to start another top-flight fixture until United lost to league leaders Arsenal on January 22 and only did so as Casemiro was suspended.

Therefore, it comes as little surprise that McTominay, who earns £60,000-per-week, is deemed surplus to requirements by Ten Hag.
