What to Consider When Building a Scarecrow
Traditionally, scarecrows were created and erected to do exactly what their name says: scare away crows that would damage crops or gardens. If you have some raised garden beds on your property that you’d like to protect from birds, or if you just want to add a fun decoration to your garden, you can make your own DIY scarecrow with some inexpensive materials and items you already have at home.
For a working scarecrow that's going to protect a vegetable garden, remember that you'll need to be able to move it. Birds get used to scarecrows eventually, so yours will need to be relocated and repositioned from time to time.
When decorating your scarecrow, make sure not to use any materials that are potentially harmful to the local wildlife, such as plastic filling or sharp objects. Keep in mind that building a scarecrow is a great way to reuse and repurpose items you already have, such as old clothes and linens. You probably already have most of the tools and materials you'll need in your workshop or garage.
