Easy to miss as no 'final' sign points to it. No formal car park but plenty of space on a quiet side road. The restoration seems to have faltered and the site has a feeling of neglect. A good interpretation board but access is denied to the grounds around it. A desire line path leads you down to partly demolished outer defence works which were the subject of excavations and are safely fenced off. It is roofed and supposedly it is occasionaly open for guided tours. An impressive building all the same and worth a look.

This building is a tower house, a type of building that served as both residence and fortification in remote or inaccessible land, and were once quite common to Scotland. This one belonged to various minor nobles including de Annand, Schaw and Cathcart families before ending up in ownership to the Earl of Mansfield.

This tower house is not open to the public, but there is some history and interpretation on the information boards on-site. One interesting feature is the roof of the house which looks like an early example of Scottish Baronial architecture by adding a tower type extension on the room. I do enjoy Scottish history, so it was only a small detour, otherwise Alloa Tower would be a better site to visit to see a good example of a Scottish tower house.

Nice tower but only a two minute visit as can’t go inside, but on the good side there are a number of identical towers close by so can make your visit more worth while

No sign of funding for the restoration of this Tower .The East side of the tower has supports high up and looks like some of the stonework has come away .There are wires running round the tower to lend support and not allow the cracks to widen. It has probably been effected by subsidence as there are mine workings in the area . There are a number of these Towers in the area with Alloa ,and Clackmannan.( Fife has 10) Alloa is the only one that is open to the public and would give you a good view of what this one was like. In the early 1600s Towers became unfashionable and families moved into large houses

Sauchie Tower was built between 1430 and 1440 by James Schaw,It is very similar to the Alloa Tower and the Clackmannan Tower
The Friends of Sauchie Tower was set up in 2002 to try to protect the tower from further decline, The Tower is built in Pink Sandstone the building was still in use in the mid 18th century until a fire collapsed some of the floors .It is hoped over time to repair some of the tower

Heading along the A91 towards Stirling yesterday with my daughter, entering the small town of Alva, and immediately upon entering the small town we noticed signs for Sauchie Tower pointing to the left along an unclassified road. We thought that we would check it out, so followed the unclassified road for just short of 1 mile until we came to Sauchie Tower on our left, it is just slightly off the road, and plenty of space to park. You will have to be eagle eyed as it is quite easy to miss. Should you miss it and end up a short distance away at the junction, just simply turn around and head back and you should be able to spot it much easier then on your right.
From what we could see yesterday it looks like renovation works to the tower are still in progress. There is no access to the tower, and the grounds around the tower were all fenced off. I was able to take photographs and that was my limit.
There is an information board explaining about the history, restoration, and 'The Friends of Sauchie Tower'. The board went on to explain that Sauchie Tower at present is only open for special guided tours during Scottish Archaeology month, and 'Doors Open Days' in September.
Still an interesting visit, but would very much like to make a return during the open days in September, or when restoration is complete and access is permitted.

As you drive along the A91 between Alva and Tillycoultry, you will see a brown tourist sign pointing to Sauchie Tower. I turned off and headed down the minor road, but I went all the way to a T junction and saw another sign pointing back the way I came! This place is not easy to find. If you are travelling south it's on the left side of the road but completely hidden by trees and other vegetation. Head north however and you will catch sight of it. It turns out the tower is not open and there is nothing much you can do except take a picture. There is an information board outside. Apparently the Friends of Sauchie Tower are trying to raise money to protect and improve it, but that could take a while.

Visited Sauchie tower during the doors open season which was organised by local preservation group. Knowledgeable volunteers took us around the grounds and up into the tower itself and provided a history of the buding. Fantastic opportunity to visit a site 'in situ' as there is no access at any other time of year
