Long before her father became President of the Philippines, Sara Duterte-Carpio made headlines as the city mayor who famously punched a court sheriff in public.
She was trying to delay the demolition of a local slum but, after boxing the man repeatedly to the face and head, Ms Duterte ended up being dubbed by one media outlet as "the slugger".
The nickname was something of an acknowledgement that she is as feisty, headstrong and controversial as her father.
Now, with less than a year to go before Rodrigo Duterte steps down from power, many Filipinos see his daughter as the ideal candidate to replace him.

Two separate surveys recently named her as the person voters most want to see as the next president of the Philippines.
She is well ahead of other potential candidates, including those who are similarly well known, such as Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos, the son of another former president, and boxer Manny Pacquiao.
Though, until now, Ms Duterte has declared she has no intention of contesting the election, which will be held in May, 2022.
"I am not being coy, nor am I doing a last minute," she has previously said.
"If the whole country doesn't want to believe that, then I can't do anything about it.
"Not everyone wants to be president. I am one of them."
But many Filipinos are convinced Ms Duterte will stand and is simply using a strategy pulled from her father's playbook.
Mr Duterte repeatedly ruled himself out as a presidential candidate in 2016 only to announce he was running a few months before the poll.
He then snubbed his own proclamation as the Philippine President, further reinforcing his image as a maverick outsider.
Ms Duterte, 43, has already spent much of her career following in her father's footsteps.
Like him, she trained as a lawyer before entering politics, replacing her father as Mayor of Davao City in 2010 — a post she still holds — after serving three years under him as vice-mayor.
Now, as talk of the election grows louder, political campaigns for and against Ms Duterte as president are gathering momentum.

"Run Sara Run" is the slogan of one key support group, which in recent weeks and months has posted banners and billboards in cities across the Philippines to encourage her to stand. Ms Duterte denies involvement in the group.
Her supporters say they want Ms Duterte to carry on the policies and projects of her father.
A former Philippines defence secretary, Gilbert Teodoro Jr, has also offered to be her running mate, saying she has the "ability to unite" Filipinos and help the country recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, because of her managerial experience as mayor.
"She would be a good president if she decides to run and to show that, I'm willing to back her up," he said.
Another supporter, politician Joey Salceda, claims "at least five parties" are now forming alliances to support Ms Duterte's candidacy, though he declined to identify them.
He says he is "100 per cent certain" that she will run for the presidency in 2022.
"There's no doubt in my mind that, based on our exchange and chats, that she will definitely run in 2022," he told local media.
But Ms Duterte's opponents have launched their own opposition group to block her run and any prospect of a "Duterte dynasty".
Known as Duterte Wakasan — or End Duterte — the group of disparate activists, workers, church leaders and students formed after the ruling party, PDP-Laban, passed a motion to encourage Mr Duterte — who is still hugely popular — to stand as vice-president, alongside his daughter.
The group says it will campaign to end Mr Duterte's rule and "his legacy of failed and detrimental policies," citing his government's management of COVID-19 and his long-running war on drugs which has killed thousands of Filipinos.
"We cannot take another six years of Duterte rule," group member Bibeth Orteza, said.
One of the president's staunchest opponents, retired judge Antonio Carpio, has also launched his own anti-Duterte coalition aimed at uniting opposition groups against the president's party or chosen successor.

The Philippines constitution bars any president from standing for more than a single six-year term. But political and legal analysts say it doesn't explicitly stop a president from then running for vice-president.
Some analysts question whether the push for Mr Duterte to run for the vice-presidency is simply a way for him to retain de facto power or escape legal accountability once he leaves office and no longer has immunity.
"Clearly, it is an ingenious and insidious move to circumvent the constitutional provision on re-election," Christian Monsod, who helped draft the Philippines's 1987 constitution, told the Rappler news service.
"The outgoing president should be preparing to step down by now, by fast-tracking unfinished promises."
Having declared earlier this month that he was reluctant to stand for vice-president, Mr Duterte this week said it might be a "good idea".
"There are a lot of people pushing me to run for vice-president. It is a good idea, particularly if we talk about the drug problem," he said in a speech.
But he has previously dismissed speculation that his daughter could succeed him, saying the presidency is "no job for a woman".
"This is not for women. You know, the emotional set-up of a woman and a man is totally different," he said.
"You will become a fool here. So … that is the sad story."
He even stated once that he was against political dynasties, though two years into his presidency he said he wanted his daughter to succeed him.
Earlier this month, Mr Duterte named Sara Duterte as one of three possible successors, along with Mr Marcos and Mr Pacquiao.
Political analysts warn that a "Duterte-Duterte tandem" winning the two most powerful jobs in 2022 would be another step in the decades-long rise of political dynasties in the Philippines.
Two of the past three presidents — Benigno Aquino III and Gloria Macapagal Arroyo — were also the children of former presidents.
But neither came immediately after their fathers, and the possibility of the Duterte father and daughter ruling the Philippines together would be unprecedented in the Philippines:
"If this really eventuates, then it will be hard for others to fathom how a democratic society can allow itself to be governed by a single family," Michael Yusingco, a senior research fellow at the Ateneo Policy Center told the news outlet Philstar.
Such families, he says, can become "unable to implement social and political reforms that ensure economic development benefits all Filipinos".
Though one global study shows the Philippines is hardly unique in its shift towards political dynasties.
Almost a third of Asian leaders likely related to former leaders
The study, published in Historical Social Research, found about one in 10 world leaders between 2000 and 2017 had family ties to politics.
"Even in democracies — where citizens may choose their leaders in free and fair elections — belonging to a political family is a meaningful advantage," authors Farida Jalalzai from Oklahoma State University and Meg Rincker from Purdue University Northwest said.
They included former US president George W Bush and current Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, both sons of earlier leaders.
"It gives candidates name recognition, some political experience and better access to allies and resources when running for office," the authors said.
Europe and Latin America had the highest percentage, the study found, but 30 per cent of Asian leaders were likely to be specifically related to former presidents or prime ministers.
Two Philippine senators have filed draft laws that would prohibit "political dynasties," meaning Ms Duterte or any other Duterte family member could not run for president immediately after his term ends.
The bills so far appear unlikely to pass and some point out such a ban itself could be undemocratic.
Mr Jalalzai and Ms Rincker also point out how family ties can play a role in women getting a foothold in the male-dominated world of politics.
"Women who do attain highest office are much more likely to belong to political families than their male counterparts," it said.
"Family ties are particularly important for women to get into politics.
"The endorsement of a powerful male relative — himself preferably a former president or prime minister — meaningfully helps female politicians establish their credibility with voters and political insiders."
