The good news for the railway reactivation in Colombia continues. This Tuesday, April 16, an important shipment of coffee for export transported through the railway corridor was shipped from the municipality of La Dorada (Caldas), in the center of the country, to the port of Santa Marta.

This is the third load of coffee that is moved by train during the Government of Change, completing 430 tons between 2023 and 2024. On this occasion, 6 platforms were transported with 160 tons of excellent coffee packed in 1-ton big bags, destined for To united states. To transport this load, the use of 5 tractor trailers would have been required, which in this experience complement the operation in the first mile, making the most of the railway, the country’s roads and maritime transport.

In this way, ANI continues to consolidate the trust of cargo generators in the country, such as the National Federation of Coffee Growers (FNC), who today are betting on this intermodal transportation network in Colombia for its logistical benefits, the reduction costs and the reduction of polluting emissions.

“This experience, hand in hand with the National Federation of Coffee Growers, allows us to ensure that coffee is transported by train in Colombia again, advancing the national government’s commitment to consolidate an intermodal transport network and connect the center of the country with the ports of the Caribbean and the Pacific through a more efficient, competitive and sustainable way,” said Francisco Ospina Ramírez, president of the National Infrastructure Agency (ANI).

For its part, the National Federation of Coffee Growers expressed that “this initiative promotes more efficient logistics and represents an economically viable alternative for the coffee sector, since it contributes to the increase in exports through the Port of Santa Marta. This allows us to make the most of the available railway infrastructure.”

The railway corridor between La Dorada and Santa Marta has a length of 767 kilometers, crossing the departments of Caldas, Antioquia, Santander, Cesar and Magdalena. The Government of Change guaranteed its operation through a Public Works contract in the section between La Dorada and Chiriguaná, which has allowed an increase of 104.6% in the mobilization of cargo in the corridor, as well as the ongoing concession of the Atlantic Railway Network with Fenoco.

In addition to 6 coffee platforms, this train also mobilizes 6 platforms with 100 tons of products from the Bavaria Group, becoming the second shipment of this company during 2024. Thus, agriculture and industry get on the train again to generate opportunities and boost the economy in the Colombian regions.
