Sant'Agata Dé Goti

Overview

Orange Flag of the Italian Touring Club

It is really hard not to be captivated by the sight of Sant'Agata de’ Goti, with its bell towers and tiled domes standing out against the houses and palaces lined up and clinging to a tufa cliff. Splendid on all sides, the most impressive view of the village is from the extremely high Vittorio Emanuele Bridge, which crosses the Martorano valley from the west, and from which you can admire the system of building arches that holds the village together.

The cultural and artistic richness you encounter while strolling through the historic centre and visiting its many places of interest make Sant'Agata de' Goti a little gem. Among the numerous churches, we note the Duomo founded in 970, rebuilt in the 12th century and restored in the mid-1700s, the church of S. Menna, inside which a carpet of Cosmatesque mosaics, among the oldest in Italy, comes to surround the choir and the church of San Francesco, of 1267, with the funeral monument of Ludovico d 'Artus and the majolica floor of the Massa brothers. The Bishop's Palace, in Piazza del Duomo, is worth a visit especially for the Hall of Coats of Arms, with effigies of 68 bishops, and for the relics and furnishings related to the life of Saint Alphonsus Maria de' Liguori.

The territory of Sant'Agata de' Goti is partly traversed by the Aquedotto Carolino (UNESCO heritage site), which runs, mostly underground, for a length of about 38 kilometres to the Royal Palace of Caserta. From the town of Longano, in the municipality of Sant'Agata de 'Goti, travelling about 5 km and admiring some "towers", you reach the third order of arches of the "Bridges of Valle", the visible and most famous part of the aqueduct.

Among the typical products of excellence, the Mela Annurcastands out, defined by many as the queen of apples, Falanghina and Aglianico wines and extra virgin olive oil. The local produce is then used to make ‘nfrennule, a kind of tarallucci-style biscuit with a unique texture and flavour.
