Good banter, get your union jack at the ready and fly it high.

I passed by this area of Belfast when I took the open bus tours. And what I can say about this place, is that it is full of history. I shows a lot of murals that represents a lot of what Belfast's history.

and many of my Southern friends have been brave enough to wander up from the Days hotel to see "what it's all about" but the recent drama re the flag etc has put their regeneration back years...

Very rundown, itimidating murals and flags everywhere and crowds standing at street corners at night time. If you are not from here you will be in trouble stay well clear at night time as i have known a few people to get a kicking. You will be welcome though if you are a hardcore loyalist and a bigot.

This road is approx half a mile long, running from behind the Europa Hotel, to the bottom of the Lisburn Road. It used to be called Carr's Row, but got it's new name from a sandbank that was next to it, to stop tidal waters of the Lagan River. It is traditionally Protestant, and holds elaborate Orange parades on the 12th. Linfield FC was founded here in 1886.
Today it's very run down, and I was reluctant to walk it's length, but as it was the middle of the day, with the bars full of soccer supporters, I chanced it. There is a bar on it called the Royal, where Alex Higgens used to frequent, and I would love to visit, but was advised by everyone I asked, not to, as I would stick out like a sore thumb, with my southern accent.

Although it's being redeveloped, the area looks run down at present. The area is entirely bedecked in British union flags and the flags of terrorist organisations such as the UVF. This makes the area feel sinister and unwelcoming.

If you want graffiti, sectarianism and reminded of what Northern Ireland used to be like then by all means visit. If your looking for something homely, welcoming and representative of modern Belfast, Stay away especially around July.

I want to visit Northern Ireland to the see the 12th July parades, as I have seen the fife and drum bands on You-tube, and they sound great. Where is a good place to view the parades and enjoy the music?
We would be staying in a timeshare south of Dublin during our stay on the island. I might be renting a car, but would taking a train into Belfast (from Dublin) be a better option?
What do you do after the parades? I want to see the YCV murals and any for the 36th Ulster.

We went for the 12th Marches last year. Our family took us up the Malone Road, they said it was the safest and more family friendly. We sat on the side of the road and watched the marches - loved it ! Most of the city is shut down so it can be difficult to get around by car. After they march one way they come back in the afternoon this is were we got stuck. We needed to cross the centre of Belfast to get back to the hotel but the roads are closed so we had to wait until the march passed again. I think anywhere in Belfast centre is a good vantage point but remember the 11th and 12th are
Public holidays so there isn't much opened. Despite what you may have heard everyone is very friendly and you might want to ask a few of the locals at the parade where best to enjoy the celebrations to get the full experience. I hope this helps
