James Gunn's Superman Adds Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent

Agents of SHIELD alum will play Clark Kent's adoptive father.

Agents of SHIELD alum Pruitt Taylor Vince has reportedly joined James Gunn's Superman as Jonathan Kent, commonly known as Pa Kent, the adoptive father of Clark Kent.

According to a report from TheWrap, Taylor Vince is the latest actor to step into the role of Jonathan Kent, following in the footsteps of such actors as Kevin Costner in the 2013's Man of Steel and Glenn Ford in 1978's Superman, to star opposite David Corenswet's Superman/Clark Kent in Gunn's new DC Universe movie.

Past portrayals of Jonathan Kent position him as the hard-working farmer from Kansas who, along with his wife Martha, adopts Kal El after he crash-lands on Earth in a Kryptonian spaceship. While Gunn's Superman is not an origin story, the movie will see the titular hero balancing his human upbringing with his Kryptonian heritage.

Taylor Vince is a veteran character actor known for his roles in movies such as JFK, Constantine, and Bird Box opposite Sandra Bullock, as well as a variety of TV shows, including Deadwood, True Blood, The Mentalist, Heroes Reborn, and Stranger Things. He also had a recurring role as Grill on Marvel's Agents of SHIELD.

He joins the growing cast of Superman alongside Nicholas Hoult as Lex LuthorRachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Wendell Pierce as Daily Planet Editor Perry White, in addition to Skyler Gisondo, Edi Gathegi, Sara Sampaio, Anthony Carrigan, Terence Rosemore, Isabela Merced, María Gabriela de Faría, and Nathan Fillion.

Superman is on track to make its debut on July 11, 2025, kicking off the DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, which Gunn and his DC Co-CEO Peter Safran are launching.
