Baseball Returns to League Play, Takes on Pepperdine on the Road

MALIBU, Calif. – The University of San Francisco baseball team (15-14, 0-3 WCC) returns to West Coast Conference play when it faces off against Pepperdine (9-20, 4-2 WCC) in a three-game series on Friday, Apr. 5 – Sunday, Apr. 7, at Eddy D. Field Stadium.

DONS AT A GLANCE:
  • San Francisco enters its first conference road series after falling at Sacramento State last Monday, Apr. 1 at John Smith Field.
  • Logan Azem and AJ Guiliana led the Dons offensively throughout the contest, combining for four hits while Azem scored the team's lone run.
  • Matty Fung reached base for the third consecutive game, going one-for-three at the plate with a walk and an RBI against the Hornets.
  • Through 29 games, Kody Watanabe leads the team and ranks eighth in the WCC with a .341 batting average. Watanabe has been the Dons' top offensive weapon, guiding the team in hits (30), doubles (10), runs scored (21), RBI (20), and slugging percentage (.571). The third baseman also leads the nation in hit-by-pitch, accumulating 18 for an average of 0.69 times per game.
  • Six Dons have recorded a home run this season, led by Michael Campagna's team-leading and career-high five. Campagna, who ranks tied for 11th in the WCC in home runs, posted his second-career multi-homer game when he totaled two on Monday, Feb. 26, in a win over Seattle U.
  • On the mound, Lance Santerre and Joe Soberon have guided the green and gold as consistent starters. Santerre leads the team and ranks fifth in the WCC with a 3.16 earned-run average, while Soberon has accumulated a 3.66 earned-run average.
  • Gabriel Barrett and Kolby Calia have been reliable out of the bullpen, allowing a combined five earned runs in 46.2 innings. Barrett has posted a career-best 0.95 earned-run average and four saves, while Calia, in his first season with the Dons, has recorded a 0.98 earned-run average in nine appearances.
  • Overall, San Francisco has totaled a .249 batting average in 29 games, ranking seventh in the WCC. Establishing themselves as a top pitching team in the conference, the Dons rank third in the league with a 4.75 earned-run average and have seven players with an ERA under 4.00.
SCOUTING THE WAVES:
  • Pepperdine has been successful at the start of conference play, earning series wins over Pacific and LMU to sit in fourth in the standings with a 4-2 record.
  • The Waves, coming off a 6-3 loss at Long Beach State on Tuesday, Apr. 2, have accumulated a 9-20 record so far this season, posting impressive wins over Tulane, Utah, and nationally ranked UC Santa Barbara.
  • Connor Bradshaw leads the team with a .342 batting average while ranking first in hits (40), doubles (11), and RBI (20). Bradshaw is on an eight-game hitting streak, hitting .353 during that span.
  • In seven starts on the mound, Nick Bonn has recorded a team-best 4.75 earned-run average, allowing 20 runs in 36 innings pitched. Bonn ranks tied for second with Matthew Boyer on the team in strikeouts with 25 while only allowing eight walks.
  • As a team, Pepperdine ranks sixth in the WCC in batting average (.266), seventh in pitching (7.31 ERA), and ninth in fielding percentage (.962).
SERIES HISTORY:
Since the 2006 season, Pepperdine holds a narrow 29-25 edge over San Francisco all-time and has won two of the last three series played. The Dons took care of business last time on the road in Malibu, winning the series two games to one during the 2022 season.
