Biography

Father of Lyndon Baines Johnson 37th President of the United States

Samuel Ealy Johnson, Jr. was born in Buda, Texas on 11 October 1877. His parents were Samuel Ealy Johnson Sr. and Eliza (Bunton) Johnson. He succeeded his future father-in-law, Joseph Wilson Baines, as a member of the Texas House of Representatives. A productive legislator, Johnson authored the Alamo Purchase Bill and the Blue Sky Law that sought to prevent the sale of fraudulent oil stock certificates in the state. He married Rebekah Baines on 20 August 1907.[1]

Sam and Rebekah had five children, as outlined in the US Census records below. His eldest child was Lyndon Baines Johnson, who was the 36th President of the United States.

1880 US Federal Census Precinct 2, Hays, Texas

In 1880, Samuel Johnson, 42, a farmer b. Georgia, lived with his wife Eliza, b. Kentucky, and six Johnson children b. Texas: Mary Johnson, 11; Frank, 9; Ava, 7; Lucy, 4, Sam, 2; and Tom, 1m b. May.[2]

1910 US Federal Census Justice Precinct 7, Gillespie, Texas

In 1910, S. E. Johnson Jr., a 32 year old farmer, lived with his wife Rebekah, 28, and son Linden, 1. All were born in Texas. This is the first marriage for both Sam and Rebekah, who have been married for two years. Rebekah has had one child. Sam's father was born in Georgia and his mother in Kentucky, while Rebekah's father was born in Louisiana and her mother in Texas.[3]

1920 US Federal Census Justice Precinct 1, Blanco, Texas

In 1920, Sam E Johnson, 42 (occupation of state legislature was crossed out), lived in a home he owned with his wife Rebekah, 38, and 5 children: Lyndon, 11; Rebekah L., 9; Josfa, 7; Samuel H., 5; and Lucia, 3. All were born in Texas.[4]

1930 US Federal Census San Marcos, Hays, Texas

In 1930, Sam E Johnson, 52, worked as an inspector for the RR commission. He lived in a place he rented with his wife Rebecca, 48; and five children: Lyndon Johnson, 21; Rebecca, 19; Josefa, 17; Sam H., 16; and Lucia, 13. All were born in Texas. Sam was 29 and Rebecca was 26 when they were first married. Sam's father was born in Georgia and his mother in Kentucky, while Rebecca's father was born in Louisiana and her mother in Texas.[5]

Death and Burial

Samuel Ealy Johnson died on October 23, 1937 in Austin, Travis, Texas, USA.[6] He is buried at the Johnson Family Cemetery, Stonewall, Gillespie, Texas, USA. [7]
