The latest adaptation of Stephen King‘s Salem’s Lot will bypass movie theaters altogether.
Warner Bros. Discovery announced Tuesday that New Line’s take on King’s 1975 bestselling novel will forego a theatrical launch and premiere exclusively on streaming service Max in 2024.
Neither a release date nor a trailer have been made available as of press time.
In the streaming-only film, author Ben Mears (played by Lewis Pullman) “returns to his childhood home of Jerusalem’s Lot in search of inspiration for his next book, only to discover his hometown is being preyed upon by a bloodthirsty vampire,” according to the official logline.
Rounding out the cast are Alfre Woodard (Luke Cage) as Dr. Cody, Makenzie Leigh (Gotham) as Susan Norton, Bill Camp (The Outsider) as Matthew Burke, Spencer Treat Clark (Animal Kingdom) as Mike Ryerson, Pilou Asbæk (Game of Thrones) as Straker, and John Benjamin Hickey (The Big C) as Father Callahan.
The new Salem’s Lot hails from the producing teams behind the Conjuring and IT film franchises. Gary Dauberman writes, directs and executive-produces. Additional EPs include James Wan, Michael Clear, Roy Lee and Mark Wolper.
Salem’s Lot was first adapted by CBS in 1979. The two-part miniseries, which starred David Soul as Ben Mears, went on to receive three Primetime Emmy nominations. That was followed by the theatrical release of 1987’s A Return to Salem’s Lot, which was marketed as a sequel but did not include any of the original characters.
Seventeen years later, in 2004, Rob Lowe headlined a second miniseries adaptation for TNT.
Will you be streaming Salem’s Lot when it makes its debut on Max? Let us know in Comments.
This would have done well in theatres. Especially in October. Too bad.
Would’ve been released a few months ago had the strikes not got in the way.
Warner bros may be the biggest joke in entertainment history with the decisions they have made the last few months. Why not go peacocks route with Halloween and have same day theater release and streaming? It would only give them more money. I doubt anyone will get a subscription for max just for that movie
Yes, Warner Bros. has been making bad decisions over the last few years as they have scrapped movies & Tv shows that were completed & ready for air & release just to save money. This should be in theaters, not on a streaming service.
At least they’re not scrapping it for parts like poor Wild E Coyote. I hope some legal complications happen for WBD and its people in charge for this whole locking in a vault and throwing away the key on completed products
Goodness, I thought they ONLY believed in theatrical releases now, under David Zaslav. Then again, hypocrites gonna hypocrit, I suppose.
Warner Bros keeps on sabotaging itself & its’ success.
I was 10 years old when the original miniseries debuted, and it scared the crap out of me!
Me Too! I was also 10yrs old at the original Salems Lot miniseries. I couldn’t open my bedroom curtains for months! 😬
I think we all remember that tap on the window (let me in)
Your NOT kidding! “Mark, Mark let me in, the Master Commands it” still gives me the chills.
I’m excited for this! I loved the book and the 1979 miniseries!
The only book that has ever scared me and I read a lot of Stephen King and scary books in high school. I was too young for the mini series and have never seen it. I didn’t even know there was a remake with Rob Lowe.
Breaking Update:
Warner Bros. Discovery announced that New Line’s take on King’s 1975 bestselling novel will now skip Max and go directly to the incinerator.
That pretty much sums up Warner Bros right now.
Yes! Can’t wait to see this adaption. WHEN will it be available? “Neither a release date nor a trailer have been made available…” Interested parties need this info! :0)
“in 2024”; TVLine will report the exact date once it is know, of course.
I don’t have max but will get it for this movie!
Yes!!! I’m still afraid of Barlow as a 52 yr old adult!!!
No movie as of now has ever truly did the novel justice, be real cool if this one did.
ABOUT TIME!!!!!
I know that, like the others, this movie adaptation will probably blow chunks (I’M LOOKING AT YOU “IT”,” CARRIE”, AND DON’T GET ME STARTED ON “THE STAND”), but it can’t possibly be more hideous than that two-part TV movie that was aired a few years back!
I’m sorry, but Stephen King’s novels rarely adapt well into movies, Like many other authors, there are some parts the books that won’t or can’t be made into a movie scene
But the Original “The Stand” was Great! The most recent adaption of this movie I watched maybe 30 minutes and changed the channel. Crap from the very beginning!
And what they did to the recent Pet Semetary movies was horrendous! They totally chopped that one up where the storyline of Judd’s character didn’t match the storyline at all.
I have been WAITING for this movie for 2 yrs. Still no actual date.. Aarggghh! I saw the second adaptation of Salems Lot in the Late 90’s with Rob Lowe and I didn’t like it then, but, recently I watched it again and it was alright, looking at it as a newly created movie but still didn’t get to me like the original mini-series. I am hoping this one will be good, but, after they literally crucified Pet Semetary in the recent movies, I will probably be disappointed again.
Warner Bros. keeps sabotaging itself. Why?
Whether or not this is ever released I would suggest checking out the original (1979) which may have been the best TV adaption of any Stephen King novel.
Yes the best!
No mention of the devastatingly un-renewed Chapelwaite as an adaptation?
I agree this should be in theaters, and being max, I’m just waiting for them to change their minds again and shelve it altogether…
There must be a good reason not to release this movie in theaters but I would absolutely watch it on Max. The original Salems Lot I watched many times and the book was even scarier.
Around Halloween time would be a great time to release this movie. Real Stephen King fans will watch!
No you did not get them right. Number One is Midnight Mass, the others I don’t care what order they go.
YES
Oh boy, with all my goodies!
