- philip w151 contributionsWhat a great place, it covers the history of the railroad, the people involved, the places and conditions. The exhibits are great and are dressed ie with tableware etc.. and one of the trains rocks as though it’s moving. There is also a fantastic model railway exhibition.
Definitely worth a visit.Written February 21, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Although not a huge museum, we stayed 2 1/2 hours and only saw a fraction of the exhibits. Even though the size of the museum isn't overwhelming, the art is impressive and interesting. The Crocker—the oldest art museum in the Western U.S.—was founded in 1885 and holds a premier collection of Californian art. The overall collection is varied, including one of the largest international (Asian, African, and Oceanic) ceramic collections in the U.S. The museum also has a lot of European art that the Crocker family purchased on their extended trips to Europe. In fact, the museum was originally built as an art gallery for the Crocker family's personal mansion. I also enjoy touring old buildings and homes, and the architecture of the rooms in the old Crocker house is amazing. I'm looking forward to returning again and seeing the rest of the museum and exhibits.Written March 26, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Travel30880121324Las Vegas, NV9 contributionsI did visit Sacramento some yrs ago, many things are the same, some things are new. Old Sacramento can easily be in a western movie 👍. It's best to stop by on a Sat & Sun ( to ride a steam engine (train offer audio & visual tours. There's plenty of things to do in Old Sacramento as well anywhere in Sacramento.Written December 22, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - bluebeansNew England, ND60 contributionsI enjoyed my indoors tour of the Capitol. Our guide was well informed and funny, if a bit rote. Be sure to see the portrait gallery of governors, especially Jerry Brown's startling choice. Most of us non-Californians probably don't know the governors of other states, and yet most of us probably know the names of most of California's recent governors (Reagan, Brown, Schwarzenegger, and more). Very interesting to see the different styles of portraiture and how they (at least in recent times) reflect the leaders' personalities. Staff are friendly and helpful, and bathrooms available.Written November 15, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Thomas VOakland, CA16,914 contributionsThis is a great bike trail along the river up above it on the flood control constructions. Good place for exercise on a sunny, but not hot, day.Written July 10, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - bluebeansNew England, ND60 contributionsThis is a beautiful park right in the middle of Sacramento, with much to see, from many memorial and honorific sculptures, to a native plant garden, to an amazing rainbow display of roses (even in winter), at least one redwood, cacti ... and more. I tried to take one of the free public tours; after a late and glitchy start, I'm glad I persisted as the tour guide (once located) was generous with his time and knowledgeable. If you take the tour, you'll learn historic and cultural facts you never could otherwise. But if you can't take the tour, still visit: just walking and enjoying is worthwhile. The park is full of benches and is a nice place to sit, contemplate, and enjoy lunch or coffee. It even has public bathrooms. Yes, I encountered some of Sacramento's homeless, but as a solo female everyone was respectful and nobody bothered or approached me at all, so please don't let that put you off. From here if you have the energy you can walk down the Capitol Mall all the way to the Old Sacramento area.Written November 15, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - GlobeTrotting7357622 contributionsWe had put together a list of places we wanted to check out. The automobile museum was our first stop. We arrived just as they were preparing to open and they invited us inside to stay warm while they finished opening. We were pleasantly greeted by the young lady at the cashier till who gave us a quick synopsis of the museum. We started wandering about and quite soon the docent, Richard Valdez, started talking to us and basically giving us a guided tour filled with the history of the museum and the cars, lovely stories and quite simply brought the entire experience to life for us. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed everything we saw and, largely due to Richard’s obvious love for what he does. When we finally left, I turned to my husband and asked him what time he thought it was and we were both shocked that we had spent over 4 hours at the museum!! Hats off to the museum, the city of Sacramento, all the people who loan or donate vehicles, the staff who work so hard to make this a must visit destination and especially Richard, and the other docents, who volunteer their time to make this a truly one of a kind, memorable experience!!Written February 4, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jim KSacramento, CA1,359 contributionsWe met Megan Stanley, supervisor, when we arrived at the Mansion. We were so impressed with Megan's staff, motavated and eager to share their knowledge.
The Mansion also had an elevator, which was a God send, as I am disabled.
We could only take photos of the exterior. FYI, parking is awful 😖Written March 2, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The priest gave a great message and personally greeted the worshippers after the service. It's well worth a visit to see the sanctuary without attending a service.Written May 24, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - pchnmainLA/OC766 contributionsSo, let's start with some basics:
The only original remaining structure of Sutter's Fort is the "main building"--a two story structure in the center of the complex. It was built between 1841 and 1843. Everything else at "Sutter's Fort State Historic Park" is a reconstruction, based on historic documentation.
Entry is $5 for adults; $3 for ages 6 to 17; and children enter for free. Sutter's Fort State Historic Park does not have its own parking lot. Metered city parking is available on 26th and K streets, and there are several public parking lots in the vicinity.
It has been 25 years since my last visit. Since then, a lot of re-construction and restoration work has been performed. There are a more displays and demonstrations than I remember. (Coincidentally, school field trips were taking place during my visit. I kept my distance, but was able to observe staff and volunteers give their presentations and conduct their demonstrations.)
If you're interested in history, Sutter's Fort is well worth the visit. Everyone can walk away with from their visit with a number of different of interpretations, based on context of analysis.
BTW ... The State Indian Museum is adjacent to the Fort. If you have the time, you can tour that museum for a separate admission fee.Written June 1, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. There was a car show going on and we got to see over 100 cooly done retro vehicles. The park is well shaded so you can walk comfortably even in warmer weather.
We had a great time and we didn't even see the Fairyland part or the Golf Course...an amazing location!Written June 4, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. You have to purchase tickets for the train rides and carousel via credit or debit card. For the store, you can only pay with card. As for the food and drink vendors, I am not sure if they only take card because we did not partake. Covid-19 has put a damper on things all around.
The Good: Sacramento Zoo went above and beyond to help me get tickets for my son and I to visit the zoo. He had traveled all the way down from Chico and I had made the mistake of not buying tickets right away. Lesson learned. The animals are well cared for. The animal exhibits are on plentiful. The Zoo is clean and well sanitized. The employees are professional. Over all, we really had an amazing day and we can’t thank Sacramento Zoo for making it happen. ❤️Written March 15, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
