Had a great time visiting. Only disappointment was being a weekday so missed out on the train ride as its only weekends. You can sit in the cab of steam loco, walk through dining and sleeping cars. Staff are excellent, polite. Informative and always take time to answer any questions

We were impressed by the curation n its collections, especially 19th century californian paintings. We get a glimpse of what it was like in that era. The building itself has lots of interesting history too. We spent about 4 hrs there. There is also an interesting collections of natives baskets and porcelain.

I did visit Sacramento some yrs ago, many things are the same, some things are new. Old Sacramento can easily be in a western movie 👍. It's best to stop by on a Sat & Sun ( to ride a steam engine (train offer audio & visual tours. There's plenty of things to do in Old Sacramento as well anywhere in Sacramento.

I enjoyed my indoors tour of the Capitol. Our guide was well informed and funny, if a bit rote. Be sure to see the portrait gallery of governors, especially Jerry Brown's startling choice. Most of us non-Californians probably don't know the governors of other states, and yet most of us probably know the names of most of California's recent governors (Reagan, Brown, Schwarzenegger, and more). Very interesting to see the different styles of portraiture and how they (at least in recent times) reflect the leaders' personalities. Staff are friendly and helpful, and bathrooms available.

The vintage cars are quite magnificent. Some of the 70s era a bit cringeworthy. There were two cars open and available to sit in if you so wished. Polite informative staff too.

This is a great bike trail along the river up above it on the flood control constructions. Good place for exercise on a sunny, but not hot, day.

This is a beautiful park right in the middle of Sacramento, with much to see, from many memorial and honorific sculptures, to a native plant garden, to an amazing rainbow display of roses (even in winter), at least one redwood, cacti ... and more. I tried to take one of the free public tours; after a late and glitchy start, I'm glad I persisted as the tour guide (once located) was generous with his time and knowledgeable. If you take the tour, you'll learn historic and cultural facts you never could otherwise. But if you can't take the tour, still visit: just walking and enjoying is worthwhile. The park is full of benches and is a nice place to sit, contemplate, and enjoy lunch or coffee. It even has public bathrooms. Yes, I encountered some of Sacramento's homeless, but as a solo female everyone was respectful and nobody bothered or approached me at all, so please don't let that put you off. From here if you have the energy you can walk down the Capitol Mall all the way to the Old Sacramento area.

My friends and I attended Mass on Sunday morning while visiting Sacramento. The sanctuary is awe inspiring. The priest gave a great message and personally greeted the worshippers after the service. It's well worth a visit to see the sanctuary without attending a service.

So, let's start with some basics:

The only original remaining structure of Sutter's Fort is the "main building"--a two story structure in the center of the complex. It was built between 1841 and 1843. Everything else at "Sutter's Fort State Historic Park" is a reconstruction, based on historic documentation.

Entry is $5 for adults; $3 for ages 6 to 17; and children enter for free. Sutter's Fort State Historic Park does not have its own parking lot. Metered city parking is available on 26th and K streets, and there are several public parking lots in the vicinity.

It has been 25 years since my last visit. Since then, a lot of re-construction and restoration work has been performed. There are a more displays and demonstrations than I remember. (Coincidentally, school field trips were taking place during my visit. I kept my distance, but was able to observe staff and volunteers give their presentations and conduct their demonstrations.)

If you're interested in history, Sutter's Fort is well worth the visit. Everyone can walk away with from their visit with a number of different of interpretations, based on context of analysis.

BTW ... The State Indian Museum is adjacent to the Fort. If you have the time, you can tour that museum for a separate admission fee.

The American River is the reason I moved here 10+ years ago. Gorgeous and peaceful.

Until you get on parkways. The bicyclists who ride the shared paths on the rivers parkway are psychopathic and assault people daily. Parks service and police can’t be bothered. I have seen them run into dogs, people, and children on both the paved and dirt paths. Then they yell at the injured for being in “their way”. Pedestrians first is not a law recognized by these maniacs.

I would highly recommend you practice P.E.A.C.E (people engaging against cyclists extremism) by bringing pepper spray on your walks or wielding a stick to create distance between yourselves and the tires.

California is a stand your ground state and you can legally pepper spray people trying to assault you

Went here for a walk and had such fun. There was a car show going on and we got to see over 100 cooly done retro vehicles. The park is well shaded so you can walk comfortably even in warmer weather.

We had a great time and we didn't even see the Fairyland part or the Golf Course...an amazing location!
