  • Giants' Alex Cobb: Set to throw from flat ground

Cobb (hip) had a clean MRI on his shoulder and will throw from flat ground Friday, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Cobb has dealt with both elbow and shoulder pain while working his way back from hip surgery. However, he's now set to resume throwing for the first time since April 1. Given his inability to ramp up consistently, Cobb will likely need several weeks before he's ready to return to a big-league mound.

  • Giants' Alex Cobb: Dealing with cranky shoulder

Cobb (hip) is dealing with mild shoulder irritation, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Cobb is primarily recovering from left hip surgery that occurred shortly after the end of the 2023 season. During the ramp up process, he's dealt with both elbow and shoulder issues that have slowed his progress. Cobb described his shoulder as "cranky," but he did note that he doesn't expect his timetable to return to be affected significantly.

  • Giants' Patrick Bailey: Picks up first steal

Bailey went 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base in Wednesday's 3-1 win over the Marlins.

Bailey's steal was his first of 2024, matching his total from 97 contests in 2023. As a catcher, speed is often not high on the list of priorities. He's cooled off after posting three multi-hit efforts over his first five games this season, but Bailey is still batting .286 with a .765 OPS, one home run, four RBI, three runs scored and two doubles over 51 plate appearances.

  • Giants' Sean Hjelle: Excelling on rehab assignment

Hjelle made the fifth appearance of his rehab assignment Wednesday with Triple-A Sacramento, striking out two while allowing one hit over a scoreless inning.

Hjelle was placed on the 15-day injured list prior to Opening Day due to a mild right elbow strain, but he appears to be bouncing back from the injury well based on how he's fared on his rehab assignment thus far. Between stops with Sacramento and Single-A San Jose, The right-hander has permitted two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out seven over 5.1 innings. Hjelle seems to be preparing for a relief role with the Giants once he returns from the IL, though if San Francisco elects to option him to Sacramento upon his activation, he could get stretched back out to start.

  • Giants' Camilo Doval: Secures save No. 3

Doval retired all three batters he faced with one strikeout to earn the save in Wednesday's 3-1 win over the Marlins.

Doval faced the heart of Miami's lineup but needed just 13 pitches to retire the side in order for his third save of the year. The right-hander gave up two runs in his first outing of the season, but he has followed up with four straight scoreless appearances and has an 8:1 K:BB during that stretch.

  • Giants' Keaton Winn: Notches first win

Winn (1-3) earned the win Wednesday at Miami after he allowed a run on four hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out four.

The right-hander kept the Marlins off the board until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Bryan De La Cruz launched a solo homer to tie the game 1-1. Winn then closed out the frame, and the Giants took the lead in the top of the seventh to put him in line for his first win of the campaign. The 26-year-old surrendered seven runs across his first two starts of the season but has bounced back in his last two outings with 2.70 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 10:4 K:BB over 11 innings.

  • Giants' Reggie Crawford: Looks sharp in Double-A debut

Crawford (lat) struck out one and worked around a walk over a scoreless inning in his season debut Tuesday in Double-A Richmond's 3-2 loss to Harrisburg.

Crawford was held back at extended spring training for the start of the minor-league season while he continued his recovery from a left lat strain, but he missed just over two weeks of action before he was cleared to report to an affiliate. Even though Crawford had covered just eight innings at High-A Eugene to close out the 2023 season, the Giants aggressively pushed the 23-year-old lefty to Richmond, where he's likely to spend most of the 2024 campaign. Though the Giants have pulled the plug on having Crawford develop as a two-way player, turning his focus to pitching on a full-time basis could accelerate his climb to the big leagues. Crawford has started in each of his 14 career minor-league appearances, but he's logged just 20 total innings and looks as though he could be deployed in relief whenever he ultimately reaches the majors.

  • Giants' Mike Yastrzemski: Resting versus lefty

Yastrzemski is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Marlins, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Yastrzemski is one of three lefty-hitting regulars in the lineup who will take a seat with southpaw Trevor Rogers on the bump for Miami. LaMonte Wade and Michael Conforto will join Wade on the bench for the series finale.

  • Giants' Michael Conforto: Day off Wednesday

Conforto is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game in Miami, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Southpaw Trevor Rogers will take the hill for the Marlins, so the left-handed-hitting Conforto will get a day off. Tyler Fitzgerald will get the start in left field for the Giants.

  • Giants' Tyler Fitzgerald: Swipes fourth bag

Fitzgerald went 0-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base in Tuesday's 6-3 loss to the Marlins.

Fitzgerald spelled Thairo Estrada at second base for this contest. After an unimpressive start to the season, Fitzgerlad has four steals over his last five games while going 5-for-12 with three extra-base hits in that span. The 26-year-old provides cover around the infield and can also play in center, though the Giants' outfield hasn't varied much this season. Fitzgerald doesn't have an obvious path to playing time in the Giants' righty-heavy infield, so he's likely to remain a utility player unless he commands a larger role with his hitting.

  • Giants' Matt Chapman: Goes deep in loss

Chapman went 2-for-4 with a solo home run a double in Tuesday's 6-3 loss to the Marlins.

Chapman has two homers over the last four games and four on the year. The third baseman's blast Tuesday opened the scoring in the second inning. His power is a welcome sight after he hit just 17 homers in 2023, but he's batting just .205 with 11 RBI, 12 runs scored, a stolen base and three doubles through 18 contests so far in 2024.

  • Giants' Ryan Walker: Handed loss Tuesday

Walker (1-2) allowed three runs on two hits and two walks over two-thirds of an inning to take the loss versus the Marlins on Tuesday.

Walker got into trouble in the sixth inning and was unable to complete the frame. Taylor Rogers got the last out, but the Giants didn't recover from the damage. Walker had allowed just two runs over his first 9.1 innings of the season before Tuesday's sloppy outing. He's at a 4.50 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 10:3 K:BB through 10 innings while adding one hold over 10 appearances. Walker is a bit buried on the leverage ladder, so it's unlikely he'll be able to consistently rack up saves or holds.

  • Giants' Jordan Hicks: No-decision vs. Marlins

Hicks didn't factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks over five innings in a loss to the Marlins. He struck out six.

Hicks was solid for the most part Tuesday, holding the Marlins scoreless through his first three innings before Miami scored twice in the fourth to tie the game. It's the first time Hicks has allowed more than a single run in a start this year -- he's 2-0 with a 1.57 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 18:6 K:BB through his first four outings (23 innings). Hicks will look to get back in the win column in his next start, currently lined up for Sunday versus the Diamondbacks.
