Quantico recap: Soon

In many ways Quantico felt like Grey’s Anatomy in the beginning: They both centered on a group of young, good-looking professionals learning together. But as the freshman season of Quantico goes on, it becomes more and more apparent the biggest difference between the two is loyalty.

While the Seattle Grace crew (or whatever they call that hospital now) would do anything for one another, including cutting a man’s LVAD wire for love, the men and women of Quantico will turn on each other at the slightest sign of trouble. In “Soon” we saw a betrayal of loyalties in both the past timeline and the present.

THE PAST, where even more people get kicked out of Quantico

With training almost done, the NATs have to go through extensive medical screenings and security clearance (seems like something that would occur before they were accepted, but what do I know). Clayton Haas visits the academy to walk the NATs through the security clearance protocol.

It’s an extensive form, and for the purpose of the audience hearing it speeding things up, the NATs pair up to fill it out. The questions include everything from medical, political, and sexual histories. When Caleb gets to the “do you have deceased immediate family members” on Shelby’s form, she tells him to say yes. She doesn’t want the FBI to find out about her parents, something she thinks Caleb understands.

But when Drew, Shelby, Iris, and Raina’s files are all flagged for further review, Shelby starts to question Caleb. It ends up being unrelated to her fake-dead parents (it was because she marked she had a sister when she started Quantico but marked she no longer does now), but it’s enough to get her doubting Caleb.

Pair that with Iris’ distrust of Caleb, and there’s a recipe for disaster. Iris has been watching Caleb prep Will for his Sistemics infiltration — occurring that night — but she thinks he’s pulling him into the cult. She confronts both of them about it, and when they blow her off, she calls Sistemics herself and outs Will as an FBI agent.

NEXT: Way to ruin everything, Iris​

When Iris tells Caleb she tattled on Will to Sistemics, he takes off for their headquarters. Sistemics members are waiting outside as he pulls up; Caleb says he’s trying to be a mole in the FBI for them — and that Will is acting on his own. And to prove his loyalty to the clan, he beats Will within an inch of his life. Luckily, Shelby shows up and the church members flee inside with Caleb, leaving her to get Will to safety. Something tells me this is what caused them to end their relationship on not great terms?

As for the other flagged candidates: Drew and Raina are both approved after further review, but Iris is not. It’s not immediately clear at the end of this episode if that means she’s out of the bureau or if we’ll see her again.

As for the trainers of Quantico, they have as much drama as their NATs. Miranda gets a guilty verdict from the Office of Professional Responsibility. She thinks this has less to do with her assigning a NAT to a case and more with her being a woman in a position the bureau never wanted her in — and she wastes no time in making that known to everyone.

Miranda runs into Clayton Haas in the parking lot; he swears that he voted against her dismissal. She believes him but for some reason doesn’t believe Liam when he says the same. But instead of pushing him on the issue, she asks him to drinks…then gets him drunk, seduces him in the bathroom, and records him saying he slept with Alex.

She takes it straight to Director Haas, but he says that doesn’t change the outcome of her ruling. When that doesn’t work, she insinuates that Liam must be holding something over Clayton’s head — because he helps him out of every jam. He, of course, dismisses that as well.

So Miranda heads to Alex’s room next. She tells her that of all the NATs, she knows she’s the most special. Miranda wants Alex to do what she couldn’t: shatter the glass ceiling.

THE PRESENT, in which Alex shatters everything except the glass ceiling

Working from her basement FBI office, Alex is trying to figure out where Will and Simon were taken by Shelby. She’s been able to track the van back to a one Mark Raymond, which she learns from Google is actually Caleb Haas.

The now-evil Ryan is watching what Alex is doing on her computer thanks to Nimah planting something (even though I feel like FBI supervisors should be able to have access to this anyway?). He thinks Alex is going to go after Claire Haas, so he calls and warns her Secret Service.

Alex needs help getting close to Ryan — the only person he’ll let near him is Nimah. So Alex calls the one person who looks just like her. Raina is back home in Michigan, where she’s been ever since Nimah turned her into the FBI for getting too close to an asset.

NEXT: It takes two​

Raina gets to New York City in record time, and dressed like Nimah, she goes to talk to Ryan while Alex has Nimah to her office. Raina-as-Nimah looks through the files Sen. Haas’ security detail sent while Nimah realizes Alex is acting fishy. She sends Ryan a note through Alex’s computer, but Raina has already slipped out.

Outside of Ryan’s office, Raina calls Haas’ security detail to get Caleb’s location — Alex thinks he’s the key to finding The Voice. They won’t give her details, but the senator says she’ll handle it herself. Next thing you know, a black SUV picks up Alex from the sidewalk.

It’s Claire — and she’s going to take Alex to Caleb herself. Caleb is where no one would ever think to look: at his own house. And he’s a drug addict. He says he replays the bombing, when his dad saved his life and then died, over and over so much that he can’t handle life sober anymore. Claire can’t handle the bad press sending him to rehab would attract, so she provides him just enough that he won’t die under her supervision.

It’s terrible, and Alex confronts Claire about it, but she also uses the time to try to get info from Caleb. She tells him that Will and Simon were kidnapped, maybe by Shelby, but he doesn’t have the energy to help…or so we think.

After Claire has left and Alex is waiting outside for a car, Caleb sneaks out and says he’s going with her to help…or so we think.

When he gets out of earshot from Alex, he calls someone and says, “She fell for it. We’re on our way now. See you soon.”
