Back in 2014, a then-32-year-old Juan Pablo Galavis became as the first Latino lead on The Bachelor. The former professional soccer player was also a single father and his daughter, Camila, was just 4 years old at the time. Juan Pablo’s season of the reality dating series was one of the most dramatic seasons in the show’s history, and he and winner Nikki Ferrell split after less than a year of dating.

Now, the ABC alum has reunited with the network, but not in the way one would expect. His daughter, who is currently a freshman in high school, auditioned for Season 22 of American Idol and sang for judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan, as well as her dad who sat in on the audition for support. Read on to see how Camila Galavis did and if she made it to the Hollywood rounds.

Did Camila Galavis make Season 22 of American Idol? Despite some tough criticism from the judges, 14-year-old Camila Galavis advanced to the Hollywood rounds, making her Season 22’s youngest contestant.

Camila’s audition took place during the final rounds of auditions, on March 24, 2024. After introducing herself to the judges, Camila revealed that her dad, who now works as a “manager in the social media industry,” was the Bachelor. Katy Perry asked if Juan Pablo found love on the show, to which Camila answered: “Yes, but they broke up.” Perry then remarked, “So he’s single?” Camila confirmed that her dad is still single, with the show then cutting to archival footage of Juan Pablo’s season of The Bachelor.

Juan Pablo eventually came into the room and greeted all of the judges. Perry joked to him, “You know what it’s like to be on television, you’re trying to throw her into this lion’s den?” to which Juan Pablo responded, “Not really.” Camila then revealed that it was the “complete opposite” and that she has been asking her dad if she could join the show for some time now. “She’s been singing since she was little and the opportunity came and I said, ‘I don’t know if you’re old enough,'” the protective father explained. “That was last year. So I said ‘Maybe next year.’ And then, here she is.”

Perry asked if Camila would mind singing in front of her father and the latter claimed that it would actually make her “more comfortable.” Camila then sang “Rabia” by fellow Venezuelan artist Joaquina, as her dad watched with tears in his eyes. The judges felt that she lacked experience and struggled with the high notes, with Luke Bryan noting: “The big high notes are still giving you a little bit of trouble … You’re so young. I just don’t know if it’s ready yet.” He also feared that “in this competition, I think you’re going to get swallowed up a little bit.”

Lionel Richie agreed and gave Camila a no, telling the young singer: “Take the time and develop it.” Katy Perry agreed that her voice needed a bit of “stretching,” but pointed out that Spanish pop is the biggest growing market. “You are authentically that, so it’s a yes for me,” Perry said.

The final vote came down to Bryan, who originally wrote down no but advised his answer, telling Camila: “The right producer could make you a hit song … you’ve got a radio tone.”

Juan Pablo smiled on as Camila was told she’s going to Hollywood. With her lack of experience and age, it’s unlikely that she’ll go far in the competition, but as Camila said in a confessional: “I’m still young, so I’ll be fine.”

Season 22 of American Idol airs on Sundays on ABC at 8 p.m. EST and streams on Hulu.
