Deadpool 3 (properly titled Deadpool and Wolverine) is the MCU‘s lone theatrical release in 2024. Kevin Feige and Ryan Reynolds worked tirelessly to craft a worthy story for the film.

In Empire's new cover story, Feige and Reynolds recalled early pitch meetings for the film. One idea that was shot down was one that took inspiration from Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon. In the film, Deadpool and Wolverine would have embarked on an adventure told from three perspectives. Reynolds thought the pitch “was a way to make a large-scale movie in a very small way.”

However, Feige turned it down. He wasn't sure how to include the foul-mouthed, R-rated superhero into his MCU. “The truth is, I wasn’t even sure how to incorporate Deadpool yet,” Feige confessed. “I was very much thinking about how to bring mutants and the X-Men into [the MCU], and I thought it needed to be more than just playing the hits. But the truth is, Ryan is an idea machine. So he may have pitched that to me, but he also pitched 25 other thoughts and ideas.”

Another idea was to make Deadpool 3 an indie film. Obviously, this was shot down, too.

“I went back to the drawing board, and I wrote up about 18 different treatments,” Reynolds told the outlet. “Some of them almost like a Sundance film, a budget of under $10 million, sort of using the IP in a way that they previously hadn’t used, and I pitched bigger movies, and I pitched things in-between.”

It took a while to find the right story. But Wendy Jacobson, executive producer, revealed it was a quick turnaround once Hugh Jackman signed on.

Shawn Levy will direct Deadpool 3. He is known for his work in the Stranger Things franchise. He also previously worked with both Jackman and Reynolds.

In the case of the former, Levy directed him in Real Steel in 2011. He then directed Reynolds in Free Guy and The Adam Project in 2021 and 2022, respectively.

Additionally, Levy co-wrote the Deadpool 3 script, once the executives landed on a story, with Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, Zeb Wells, and Reynolds.

The film will team Deadpool (Reynolds) with Wolverine (Jackman) and the TVA (Time Variance Authority). He embarks on a mission that will affect the entire MCU timeline.

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman will team up in the MCU film. Jackman previously played Wolverine for Fox's X-Men universe from 2000-17. However, his character died in 2017's Logan. Deadpool 3 seemingly features an alternate reality version of the character.

Emma Corrin and Matthew Macfadyen both play pivotal roles in the film. Corrin plays Cassandra Nova, the film's antagonist. Macfadyen plays Gambit, a TVA agent.

Morena Baccarin, Leslie Uggams, Rob Delaney, and Karan Soni headline the returning cast members from the last two Deadpool films. Jennifer Garner, who starred in Shawn Levy's The Adam Project with Reynolds, makes her return to the role of Elektra in the film as well. She previously played the part in 2003's Daredevil and her own solo film.
