This is unvarnished, from the horse's mouth, week-in-the-life Lombardi. Well, maybe it's varnished a little. It is, after all, ghost-written by the author of "MASH", but that just means it's probably a bit better written than your average collection of Lombardi-isms.

I liked that the book is not all rah-rah. You see Lombardi's exhaustion, how the season takes a toll on him, how he's unsure of his decisions. You don't just see the "Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing" cartoon that has come down to us.

The NFL pressure-cooker coaching life must be hard on a person, and you get a glimpse of it here. Lombardi died tragically young, only 57, from digestive complaints that turned out to be aggressive cancer. It was one battle that, despite all his feistiness, he could not win. And you're left wondering if a life dedicated to perfectionism, to strife, is ultimately a destructive monument.

However you answer such questions, the fact that this book raises them makes it the best sort of autobiography. Thanks Vince & thanks Mr. Heinz for being the midwife.

I bought this "collectible" copy of the original hardbound edition of Run to Daylight. It was mutilated. Someone had defaced it, cutting out pages that contained precious, and rare photographs. It is a terrible shame. I had read the book several times already since it was first published. I actually read it when it came out. I was age 12, and an avid football fan. The book is not that well written, but was, at the time, a hot item. When the book was published Vince Lombardi was in only his fourth year as the coach of the Green Bay Packers. (The town hired him in 1959, after ten years of losing seasons and futilely. They were 0-11-1 in 1958, the year before they hired Lombardi). Lombardi coached the Packers to their first winning season in 1959, 7-5, (the NFL played a 12 game season until 1961 when it increased it's season to 14 games). In Lombardi's second year, (1960), the Packers captured the Western Division on the last day of the season with a record of 8-4. They played the Philadelphia Eagles in Philadelphia in old Franklin Field, and lost 17-13 to Norm Van Brocklin, the colorful, future Hall of Fame quarterback, who gave Philadelphia it's last NFL championship. By 1962, Lombardi had won his second NFL championship, and people were paying attention to this exciting coach. The book covers a week of practice, and a game, in Green Bay, against the Detroit Lions, who, at the time, had the best defense in the NFL, with Alex Karras, Joe Schmidt, Night Train Lane, Roger Brown, the first 300 pound player. The Packer won the game 9-7 after the Lion's QB, Milt Plum took it into his head to throw a pass with minutes left in the game, sitting on a 7-6 lead.The book, Run to Daylight has many rare photographs of that game, in October, 1962, which adds to it's value. But since some fool cut several of the pictures out, the value of the book sold to me has been considerably diminished. That game, and the book, wasn't the end of the story. The Packers continued to roll on to a 10-0 record when they met the Lions for the second time on Thanksgiving Day in Ford Field in Detroit. Jerry Kramer, in his book, Instant Replay best describes that game, often referred to as the "Turkey Day Massacre." The Lions mauled the Packers, sacking Bart Starr ten times, (Yes. 10), in the first half. At the end of the first half the Lions led 23-0, and won the game 26-14. Green Bay left Detroit bruised, and 10-1, ending their perfect record. There was no daylight that Thanksgiving Day in Detroit for Green Bay. Lombardi, as all football fans of a certain age know, went on to become the greatest coach the NFL ever produced. But that is another story. BTW: I should be refunded by this seller.

An excellent book regarding not just football, but how to think and act throughout the day. An interesting look into 60's football from the perspective on the inside. The interaction of the coaches between themselves and the honest opinions of the coaches toward their players and each other is a refreshing change from the lack of honesty permeating professional sports today. The strong points of the book hinge upon the "life statements" made by the author regarding the play of the game, but life in general. The emphasis on honesty, equity, and hard work have turned the book (for me) from a historical account of 1960's football to how to look at life. A highly recommended read.
