Rudolf Otto Sigismund Lipschitz

Rudolf Lipschitz (1832 - 1903) was a professor in Bonn. He gave his name to the "Lipschitz continuity condition", but his research interests included many areas of both pure and applied mathematics.

In 1846 Lipschitz began his academic studies in mathematics at the Albertus-Universität Königsberg. He earned his doctorate in Berlin in 1853 with Gustav Dirichlet and Martin Ohm as his supervisors and taught at the Universities of Berlin and Breslau until 1864, when he became professor in Bonn. Here, he was the doctoral examiner of Felix Klein in 1868.

Lipschitz focused on many areas of pure and applied mathematics, from number theory to potential theory and elasticity theory. He became well known for his "Lehrbuch der Analysis".
