The Daily Show is currently without an everyday host. Things have still been moving along. Jon Stewart returned to host on Monday nights. While things got off to a slightly contentious start (depending on who you ask), he’s settled back in like he never left. When Stewart isn’t behind the desk, the show has been rotating through different correspondents, like Jordan Klepper, Dulce Sloan, Desi Lydic, Ronny Chieng, and Michael Kosta as hosts. The method has kept the show going, even if it lost Roy Wood Jr. along the way.
Wood Jr. was considered by many to be the frontrunner for hosting duties. The longtime correspondent had more than proven himself capable. He had endorsements from people in the industry. It seemed like a foregone conclusion that he would take the reigns. However, that did not happen (at least not quickly enough), and Roy took his hat out of the ring. Despite leaving the show, the comedian was present when the show won an Emmy for Outstanding Talk Series.
Former host Trevor Noah was accepting the award on the show’s behalf. Behind him, Roy Wood Jr. was mouthing the words, “Please hire a host.” The moment went viral on Twitter. Wood Jr. responded to it somewhat jokingly. It seemed relatively innocuous. Still, he wasn’t the only one questioning Comedy Central’s handling of the show’s hosting chair, and a little over a week after the Emmys, Comedy Central made the Stewart announcement.
When speaking to Business Insider, Roy Wood Jr. revealed he apologized to people at The Daily Show the same night. “I bounced around the after parties and I threw out a few apologies to coworkers, some of whom are here tonight, and we’re still friends,” the comedian told the outlet. There don’t appear to be any hard feelings. However, things are different.
Roy Wood Jr. attended the WGA Awards and admitted that the vibes have changed. “It is odd being here and seeing them as former colleagues instead of current colleagues, like that part is different,” he told Business Insider. “It’s like seeing your ex out with somebody new, but you broke up on good terms.” The former Daily Show correspondent is moving on. He’s set to tackle two shows and a book. He’ll land somewhere, just not The Daily Show.
