Although this may really be a 4 1/2 in disguise (I think it is, musically), I give it a 5 because it opened up a lot of doors for me in terms of my listening. I was drawn in by the presence of downtown NYC hidden in Brazil - Arto Lindsay produces, Velvets cover, Laurie Anderson guests, Philip Glass does an arrangement, etc. - but I was won over by Monte's gorgeous, lilting voice, by the sheer beauty of the tunes (especially Carlinhos Brown's spectacular "Segue O Seco"), the playing throughout (Bernie Worrell!), the variety of moods, the whole package, basically. It's great like a great CD - not LP - should be. LPs flow one side at a time, peaking in the middle because each side had to open and end strong. CDs flow differently because it's a non-stop experience, and while they (should) open and close strong when they're good there's no guarantee about that middle stretch, which can often last up to and over and hour. Luckily, this one's strong throughout with some of the best stuff dead center ("Danca Da Solidao") and not prone to the bloating up to 79 minutes that infects so much CD-era product. A cool 50 or so is all she needs to say her piece. Anyway, the new songs stand up to the great stuff she covers, which from Lou Reed to Jorge Ben to Paulinho da Viola to the 50's samba that closes things out never once makes me wonder about how the original sounds, and "Segue O Seco" takes the top honors of the album. Flawed? Maybe a little but great anyway and a huge personal fave.
