Future Favorites — Rose Stradner (1938) 🇺🇸

February 08, 2022

Rose Stradner, latest Hollywood importation from the European stage, is one of the few people from Austria who, without making the effort, has been able to retain the charm and gaiety of Vienna in her attitude and speech...

by John Schwarzkopf

That Miss Stradner will be a sure-fire success on the American screen is assured by that quaint old-world charm that she has brought to America with her... With the same gayety that marks her every movement, Miss Stradner is preparing herself for her first picture, The Last Gangster...

The day she arrived in Hollywood she insisted on visiting her new studio, M-G-M, for an exploration trip... and to meet some of those strange people who call themselves “Americans”... She met Robert Taylor that day along with several others but... although she has never seen him, Gary Cooper is still her favorite actor... “He is so American,” is her reason for selecting a star off her “home” lot as her favorite...

Born in Vienna, the daughter of a factory manager, Miss Stradner attended the Academy of Dramatic Arts... and played her first professional engagement in Zurich, Switzerland... returning to Vienna to play in Volks Theatre... Photographs of her by a famous Viennese artist attracted the attention of studio executives... and tests and a contract followed...

She is married to Karl Martin, screen director, who remained behind in Austria... But rumor has it he will join his wife in Hollywood... Tall, blonde and slender and a little on the Dietrich side, Miss Stradner speaks English perfectly... having learned the language in schools in Vienna...

During her stage career she has starred in plays by Shakespeare, Goethe and George Bernard Shaw... One of her most recent hits was in Fraulein Elsa... Others of her most notable appearances are: Oscar Wilde’s Lady Windermere’s Fan, Dinner at Eight, Theodore Dreiser’s An American Tragedy and Somerset Maugham’s Victoria...

Fine actress though she is, Miss Stradner has many interests outside the theatre... Of her many interests in sports, tennis is probably the most outstanding... Golf, swimming and horseback-riding are of equal importance to Miss Stradner...

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer hold great hopes for their latest importation... She’ll be a star for sure... One of her first Hollywood screen appearances will be in The Last Gangster, in which James Stewart helps her to carry on the love interest... Edward G. Robinson is the star of this production.

Rose Stradner’s personality and talent makes her one of the most promising “finds” of the year.
