Saint of the Month

Saint Stanislaus was born in Poland in 1030 to a noble and pious family. When his parents died, he distributed his wealth to the poor and became a parish priest. He later became vicar-general and was known for his spiritual direction. Becoming Bishop of Cracow in 1072, he preached against sinful living and unjust government. He was killed in 1079 while celebrating Mass by King Boleslaus who had been excommunicated for war crimes. Stanislaus was canonized in 1253 and is the patron of Poland and soldiers in battle. Symbols of Our Faith

The symbol of the vine and branches is sometimes found in religious art. The image comes from scripture in which Jesus indicates that he is the true vine and that we are the branches (John 15:1-11). The vine and branches symbolize the bond that exists between Jesus and his believers and of the need to abide or remain attached to him if we are to bear fruit in the world.

Lord God, we praise and thank you for all that you have created. Increase our awe and wonder at the beauty and grandeur of the earth and help us to recognize the worth of all things. Make us good stewards of the earth’s resources and protectors of all its creatures. Help us to work together for a better future in which the common good of all is served and in which all of us live together in peace and unity. May our children and generations to come know the goodness and work of your hands as well as the tenderness of your love with which you care for us. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

On April 17, we celebrate the Memorial of St. Kateri Tekakwitha, patron of the environment, ecologists and environmentalists. On April 22, we celebrate Earth Day. Carry out activities that reduce your carbon footprint, such as carpooling, taking public transit, planting a tree, buying locally grown food from the farmer’s market, switching to online bills, eating vegetarian meals, and using a refillable water bottle.
