You would think that writing a television series based on the thirty minutes that a couple have just come home from work wouldn't work; I mean, most people are fairly catatonic after a long days work. However, the times we get to peak in on Roger & Val's lives are when interesting things have happened, but even with their everyday actions they are fascinating to watch. They are very much your average couple, chatting about work, people they know, going through the ups and downs of marriage, and dealing with personal grief, which is the undertone of these episodes. I won't give it all away here, but the grief is just enough as to not overwhelm the audience, but hit you in just the right places. The couple really pulls you in, and you begin to like them so much. I have to admit, I was tearful at times, and the writers and actors caused this reaction in such simple ways, nothing too over the top, or in your face, just life happening and this couple working/living through it.
The writing and acting is so brilliant; I know I said it already, but I have to say it again. The ability to bring out the mundane is what makes it all work. And I love the idea of a continuous show; there's no skipping forward, if Val comes home to have a cup of tea, you watch her make the tea from start to finish. It's also just the two actors, they may reference other people, but it's just the two carrying the show.
I'm curious when the US will decides to develop it's own Roger & Val episodes, though I'll be disappointed because I really love Alfred Molina and Dawn French, they are both wonderful actors and really believable as husband and wife.
I'm just so taken by this series. It would make a wonderful play. Congratulations to everyone involved and many thanks for creating such a wonderful show. I can't wait to watch more!

It's a brave program, no gimmicks, no laugh track, no special effects, no location other than their home, and French and Molina are the sole members of the cast. So everything depends on the writing and the acting. And what writing! And what acting! Molina I knew as a dramatic actor of great skill, and here he not only shows a flair for comedy but draws a performance from French that far transcends the usual comic roles she is known for.
This series divided critics when it came out in 2010 and I hate to say it but if you don't "get it" then you are probably too young.
Between arguments over fridges and fish fingers we find a brilliantly written and well crafted show about a quirky and rather odd couple.
I found out about this show by mistake on Netflix. I was searching for shows with Dawn French in and Roger & Val Have Just Got In stood out to me for some reason.
While it does take a little while to get into the real life system that use to film this series I, for one, really enjoy it.
This might sound strange, but I own a few DVD's that I treat more like Audio Books. I like to put the DVD on, close my eyes and relax and this show is perfect for that too.
