Sinatra - Bennett? Which one will stand the test of time best? Sinatra, when he tossed away the gimmicks is perfection. But Bennett's perfection is his lovely rough-edged voice that brings such a glow to the songs he sings. Bennett is the singer; Sinatra the songs.Yet, given such treasures as he has here, Bennett treats each one as a precious diamond, all the more perfect because that superb instrument, his voice, is matched with the brilliance of Hart's lyrics, and a brighter, more joyous set of melodies than Rodgers provided for Hammerstein. Here, there is "no lark that is learning to pray" - one of the dumbest lyrics ever, and from Hammerstein! Bennett has musical gold here, an album of songs that have been treasured since they were first recorded decades ago.
Even if you think you know Bennett, get a hold of this CD and discover how much you never knew about one of the great stylists of the last seventy years.
RECORDED IN NEW YORK CITY IN SEPTEMBER 1973. TWENTY CLASSIC RODGERS AND HART COMPOSITIONS SUNG BY TONY BENNETT AT A TIME WHERE HE WAS FULLY ESTABLISHED AS AN ALBUM PERFORMER, AND NOT ONLY PRODUCING HIT SINGLES. HIS VOICE IS AT IT`S ABSOLUTE BEST, FULLY DEVELOPED AND UNDER CONTROL, AND THE RICHNESS OF HIS WARM AND KNOWING INTERPRETATIONS BRINGS OUT EVEN MORE THAN WE NORMALLY EXPECT FROM THESE WONDERFUL FAMILIAR SONGS. SONGS INCLUDE MANHATTAN, LOVER, BLUE MOON, MY ROMANCE, THOU SWELL, MY HEART STOOD STILL, MOUNTAIN GREENERY, SPRING IS HERE, THIS FUNNY WORLD, THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GIRL IN THE WORLD, ISN`T IT ROMANTIC, AND OTHER GREAT STANDARDS. WONDERFUL, INTIMATE PLAYING FROM RUBY BRAFF / THE GEORGE BARNES QUARTET GIVES A PERSONAL AND "NIGHTCLUB" FEELING TO THE OVERALL PERFORMANCE. THESE MUSICIANS OBVIOUSLY LOVED THE TOTAL EXPERIENCE AS THEY WRAPPED THEMSELVES AROUND TONY`S CARING VOCALS. TOTAL CLASS, TASTE, AND TALENT ! DON`T THINK TWICE....YOU WILL LOVE THIS FABULOUS CD.
I bought this CD, primarily because it features Ruby Braff and George Barnes playing together. Their short musical collaboration of less than two years, closely matched two rather unlikely musical instruments - the cornet and the electric guitar - played with consummate skill and not a little humour by two fabulous musicians who couldn't stand the sight of each other ! Add to the mix the carefully crafted songs of Rodgers and Hart, fronted by a slightly understated Tony Bennett and you have a CD full of good things - subtle, witty, inventive and tuneful. A very good buy if you can find it. I took me quite a while to track down a copy, but it was worth the wait.
There aren't that many male jazz singers to choose from, so finally I decided to give Tony Bennett a chance. And he's really a lot better than I expected, though never reaching the sustained heights of Sinatra. It's a very pleasant album, no doubt, and the backing is first class, but it does tend to reside in the middle of the road and is not an album I revisit very often.
I am not a big Tony Bennett. One or two an evening would be sufficient. But Ruby Braff's cornet playing, and George Barnes riffs on electric guitar elevate these songs to a much higher level. Definitely glad I purchased the music.
