Boring, straightforward, rhythm-and-blues/gospel-based songs on the side A - and brilliant, experimental, full of drive and progressive side B.

Vanilla Fudge's last album "Rock & Roll" was released during the last days of 1969, a set of seven songs that were probably recorded by a group in process of disintegration, and still showcasing a nice example of 1960's hard rock ('proto-metal' some might say), with powerful vocals -courtesy of organist Mark Stein-, considerable soul and funk incidence, and extensive organ use to create atmospheres, an idea copied by the likes of Uriah Heep, Humble Pie, Yes, and especially Deep Purple, a fact that made Vanilla Fudge an influential band during the early days of heavy rock.
Besides Stein, who seemed to be the main composer and brain of the group, Vanilla Fudge consisted of guitarist Vince Martell and the powerhouse rhythm section of Carmine Appice on drums and Tim Bogert on bass, a pair who remind one of John Bonham and John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin, and indeed there are passages on this album passages that bring Zeppelin to mind, not to mention Bogert & Appice's next band, Cactus, and of course, Deep Purple and Uriah Heep.
Stein's outstanding vocals on Carole King's "I Can't Make It Alone" and "I Need Love", the splendid arrangements on "The Windmills of Your Mind", "Church Bells of St. Martins", and "Lord in the Country", and the hardened funk-rock chaos of "Street Walking Woman" turn "Rock & Roll" into the perfect Vanilla Fudge testament, reminding one that the bronze of the heroes isn't always reserved for the pioneers.

Vanilla Fudge's previous album Near the Beginning is my personal favourite by them and while Rock & Roll is an obvious step back from it's predecessor there are still good moments in this album as well. The opener "Need Love" is a nice heavy rocker and somehow I'm also able to enjoy their cover version of "The Windmills of Your Mind" as well. But unfortunately the record also includes some rather weak tracks like "Lord in the Country" and "Church Bells of St. Martins".
This one is an extremely unbalanced effort with both good and weak moments to offer. Rock & Roll isn't Vanilla Fudge at their best but not at their worst either.

I remember that (when I was younger) I have liked the opening song very much, but that I was frankly embarrassed by B2. This is definitely not for me anymore.

A very disappointing follow-up to the heavily acidic "Near the Beginning". The opening track stands out as one of the heaviest songs of the 60s with an incredibly deep and heavy metal riff that Uriah Heep ripped off as fast as soon as they formed. "Street Walking Woman" also stands out as a really nice heavy rock track that is characteristic of the proto-metal legacy this band is fondly remembered for. Unfortunately, the majority of the rest of the album is just bad. Apparently they tried to get back to their commercially successful debut pop days, but after a couple years of embracing heavy rock they forgot how to do it.
