Maroon Baseball outslugs defending National Champion

The DH Facts:

Location: Lynchburg, Va.

The Short story: The Roanoke College baseball team scored 27 runs and ripped 33 hits Saturday as the Maroons split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader at the University of Lynchburg, the defending Division III National Champion. RC hit 10 extra base hits on the day, including three home runs, as Lynchburg won the first game 8-6 and Roanoke took game two 21-8.

How it happened (Game 1):
*Roanoke scored single runs in the first and second innings to go ahead 2-0, but Lynchburg plated one in the fourth, four in the fifth and two in the seventh to take a 7-2 edge.
*Roanoke scored four in the eighth and had the bases loaded with one out, but the potential tying run was thrown out at home on a sacrifice fly opportunity to end the inning.
*After Lynchburg added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth, the Maroons had runners on first and second with one out but Colin McGuire struck out the last two batters to end the game.

Inside the numbers (Game 1):
* Tucker Schiavoni went 3-5 with two RBI and Hunter von Zelowitz was 2-5 with a double and three RBI.
*Jonny Wall had a hit and three walks and Nate Prince had two hits and was hit by a pitch.
*Quinn Madden had three hits for the Hornets.

How it happened (Game 2):
*After Lynchburg took a 6-2 lead in the third inning of the nightcap, the Maroon offense exploded for 11 runs in the top of the fifth. Roanoke plated runs in every inning the rest of the way to pad the lead, including two each in the seventh and eighth and three in the ninth.
*The RC pitching staff settled down to record five scoreless innings out of six after the third.

Inside the numbers (Game 2):
*Roanoke's 1-2-3 hitters, Corey Coogan, Dylan Bonzon and Wall, combined to go 13-18 with 11 RBI and nine runs scored. Coogan and Wall each had a double and a home run.
*Hayden Giordano was 3-6 with a triple and three runs scored.
*Kyle Moshier went 2-4 with a double, three RBI and two walks and Cayden Freels also homered.

Up Next:
*Roanoke (7-10/3-1 ODAC) travels to Pfeiffer University (N.C.) Tuesday for a non-conference game at 4 p.m.
