Maroons Defeat Marlins on Women’s Lacrosse Senior Day

THE GAME FACTS
Score: Roanoke 24, Virginia Wesleyan 4

The Short Story: The 15th-ranked Roanoke women's lacrosse team cruised to a 24-4 victory over Virginia Wesleyan in an ODAC matchup at Kerr Stadium.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Shaunice Rone got the Marlins on the board first, scoring just 28 seconds into the game. But the Maroons countered with a massive 14-0 run, notching the last eight goals of the opening frame and the first six markers of the second period to build up a hefty advantage. Libby Bowman and Grace Koutouzis combined for seven of those 14 goals, while Kate Loughran scored one and assisted on six others.
  • Helen Kennedy-Butler broke the drought for VWU with 4:43 remaining in the first half, but goals from Loughran and Koutouzis to close out the second period put Roanoke ahead 16-2 at the break.
  • The Maroons outscored the Marlins 5-1 in the third quarter and 3-1 in the fourth frame to produce the 20-goal final margin.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Loughran set career-highs with six assists and eight total points, while fellow senior Tiernan Connor matched her career bests with five helpers and seven points. Koutouzis also totaled seven points, recording four goals and three assists, and she collected a game-high four caused turnovers.
  • Bowman finished with four goals, and Maddie McDonald contributed a hat trick. Raegan Becker notched two goals, while Soria Ebert posted one goal and one assist.
  • Sophia Chickering pulled in 14 draw controls and notched one goal. Kyleigh Chickering, who made two saves with two goals allowed while playing the first half between the pipes, saw some time as an outfield player and tallied her first career goal in the fourth quarter. Addison Schmidt forced two turnovers and notched a goal as well.
  • Rone paced the Marlins with two goals and five draw controls.
  • The Maroons outshot VWU 40-11 and produced a 20-10 overall advantage on the draw circle.
