      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Road House updates a cult classic for a new generation, happily replicating the original's emphasis on cheesy brawn over narrative brains.

      Audience Says

Road House can sometimes be so bad it's good, but more often, the uneven acting and ridiculous story are just disappointing.

Rafer Guzman Newsday The gonzo magic of the 1989 original is gone, but there’s enough bone-breaking action here to satisfy B-movie aficionados. Rated: 3/4 Apr 8, 2024 Full Review Philip De Semlyen Time Out The combination of Gyllenhaal’s easy charm, some Florida sunshine and at least one fight scene for the ages make this Road House worth stopping by. Just try to grab a seat in a quiet corner. Rated: 3/5 Apr 1, 2024 Full Review Wenlei Ma The Nightly (AU) More dynamic and less strange than the original, this remake is a hell of a good time as long as you don’t think too hard about any of it. But it probably won’t reach cult status, it’s neither excellent nor terrible enough for that. Rated: 3/5 Apr 1, 2024 Full Review James Marsh South China Morning Post Gone is the throat-ripping and the simmering homoeroticism that pulsated throughout the original, replaced by a competent if uninspired combination of mixed martial arts and conventional bar brawling. Rated: 2/5 May 9, 2024 Full Review Dan Buffa Ramble On With Buffa (Substack) Swayze won’t roll in his grave, but he can rest soundly knowing this one pales in comparison to his original gem. Sometimes it’s best to leave it alone, even if the world of film received a gift wrapped bad guy in McGregor. Rated: C May 7, 2024 Full Review James Kendrick Q Network Film Desk it has little ambition other than to outdo its predecessor, but there is some sense of integrity in its direct approach to the material, and you can’t help but enjoy watching Jake Gyllenhaal play the role of the steely, contrived, reluctant hero Rated: 3/4 Apr 25, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Mick M I love this movie. It is a great dissection of 'Testosterone Movies' in their basic form. Usually its the surrounding formulaic group that adds the layers to the stoic hero. Which is even the case in the original. In that movie, when the hero started showing emotion, they added another stoic hero to make up for it. In this movie the tables have turned. The surrounding cast of characters are their formulaic stereotypes, even the dasterdly villains. Which in turn pull the same trick with its antagonists that the original did. Once the main antagonist of the film 'Brandt' reveals any emotion, it is preceived as weekness and we are introduced to another more intense and extremely masculine antagonist in 'Knox. In this film it is the protagonist and perceived hero 'Dalton' who adds the layers. He shows his mental health struggles and other vulnerabilites. He is constantly conflicted with himself and fighting his demons. At his core he is as wild and wreckless as Knox but fights it constantly to be in control. By the end of this modern day Western with a twist. We get a new message that washes away the ideas of heroes and villains. I'd like to see more stories told like this. Thanks for reading, Mick Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/16/24 Full Review Ciara H This movie was an incredible depiction of it's predecessor. Jake Gyllenhaal as Dalton was a phenomenal choice! Every time he was on the screen I received the same feeling as when Patrick Swayze would enter a scene in 1989. It was action packed, flirty, and hit all the points it needed to be considered Road House. The only down side I can really give is the extreme scene at the end. Sometimes less is more especially when trying to follow a classic. Patrick Swayze as an actor made Roadhouse what it is today. Jake Gyllenhaal would have done the exact same without the over CGI ending. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/15/24 Full Review Audience Member This movies is not for film nerds.
