Ok so full disclosure, I love Kelly Clarkson. Like, love-her-to-death, google-what-she's-been-up-to sort of love. When I first heard that she was doing a children's picture book though, I secretly had my reservations (not another celebrity trying to write a book!) but as I said, I love Kelly to death.

Well, this is no fluke. "River Rose and the Magical Lullaby" is such a sweet, short, and simple picture book that there is really nothing to pick on. The story is straightforward and easy for young kids to follow and read along, and the illustrations convey the magical fun with the bright colours and cute sketches. It honestly makes for a delightful bedtime story, and even comes with a melodic lullaby from Kelly Clarkson that she wrote for this picture book (which is obviously great, because Kelly can even sing Tinder profiles).

It definitely feels like a franchise in the making, one where River Rose (and lil' bro' Remington!) goes on many magical adventures. Please, will Kelly read/sing them to me?

A lovely story about a girl called River Rose who is sung a lullaby before bedtime. The story entails River Rose looking out her window to find some balloons that she holds onto to take her on an adventure to the zoo. She comes across many animals. She has a zoo party with some, discovers some others in the snow and finds some in the water such as hippos, turtles and an otter. River Rose has a wail of a time with the animals before she remembers the lullaby and tucks up back into bed.

Review originally published on my blog, Nine Pages .

River Rose is so excited to be going to the zoo the next day. Her mother tucks her in and sings her a lullaby. That night, magic balloons show up outside her bedroom window and transport her to the zoo, where she has a party with the animals, none of whom are confined to their compounds. I like that at some point in the night she asks her friend, Joplin the dog, what he wants to do. At the end of the night, when the polar bears tell her that they need sleep, she snuggles up with the bears and sings the lullaby that her mother sang to her to the bears. She ends up back in her bed, glad for her adventure, but glad too to be home. Was it a dream? Was it real? Does she go again to the zoo the next day and is she disappointed when she sees the reality of the zoo in the daylight? The book doesn’t say.

There was nothing magical about the lullaby, in fact the lyrics are clunky, which I find odd since the author is a singer/songwriter.

There's no moral to the story, nothing educational, and it's void of anything unique or creative. Felt like it was written in less than 10 minutes. The illustrator put more thought & effort into this book.

And what's up with the back cover author bio being a long list of all Kelly's accolades detailing every music award she's ever won and how many of each she's accumulated.

Wonderful illustrations! I liked the prose and the song too:
Every night you lie with me
When I wake yours still here.
I don't know if I could ever find
Someone as kind and dear.
No one gets me like you do;
You can tell by my smile.
I'm gonna miss you so much while you sleep.
But know that I'm by your side.

How reassuring. Also very encouraging to talk your kid into going to sleep instead of continuing to play. It encourages dreaming.

My favorite picture is when River Rose and Joplin fly and swoosh into the nigh, holding on to balloons and soaring above the nighttime skyline.

This book is the cutest book ever. Little Rose has big dreams of going to the zoo, literally. The rhythm in the book is beyond amazing. It has life meaning of a friendship between Joplin and Rose, that could teach children how to have a friendship and share. I really enjoyed this book and recommend this book to anyone teaching or who have children.

River Rose is worried about going to sleep and excited to go to the zoo the next day. Her mother sings her a lullaby that helps her relax. When she's awoken by a noise outside her window in the middle of the night, she grabs some balloons floating by and spends the night playing with the animals at the zoo. A fun group read aloud!

This picture book is too cute!

River and Joplin take us along as they learn about animals while having fun at the zoo. River is very kind and considerate of both her best friend, Joplin, and the animals.

...by as fun and exciting as the zoo is, there is nowhere as special as home. ❤️

A little girl was excited that the next day she was going to the zoo. She was having trouble getting to sleep and then magical balloons show up at her window and she's whisked away to a party with the zoo animals.

Kelly Clarkson writes a story about a young girl who is so excited to go to the zoo that she can't even hardly sleep. She is awoken in the middle of the night by magical balloons and is whisked away on an adventure. This book also comes with a link for the magical song.

A young girl dreams of the zoo she will visit the next day and imagines herself having a nighttime party/adventure with all the animals. One on one or preschool .

Lullaby then a magical trip to the zoo, just crazy, there is no continuity and the rhyme and rhythm of the language is so awkward especially for a musician.

I find it hard to believe this book was written by a singer/songwriter. The story was so forced and had no rhythm; it was nearly unreadable at times. Go back to singing, Kelly Clarkson.

The illustrations are good. The story was mediocre from an adult point-of-view. WIll have to see how a child likes it.

Cute illustrations. The rhyming and simplicity of the story with an added parenting principle as its moral reminds me of the children's books I read as a child growing up in the '90s.

I always found something rather sweet about Kelly and that sweetness shines in her picture book. The book is filled with animals and imaginative fun. The pictures and the story flow nicely together. I believe the little ones will have some very special moments when their parents read Kelly's book to them at bedtime. Sweet and peaceful dreams to all!
