      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

It may not win the franchise many new converts, but this back-to-basics outing brings Riddick fans more of the brooding sci-fi action they've come to expect.

Tina K Really cool other-world set, creatures and costume design. I appreciate that VD talks slowly and carefully otherwise I wouldn't understand what he's saying with his Jersey? accent. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/05/24 Full Review Just T I don't think it's possible to make movies like that these days. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/19/24 Full Review Emilliano Jr S Perhaps a slight improvement from the horrible 2nd entry. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/21/24 Full Review Pedro P Is an entertaining action movie with well choreographed fights but the story is average and predictable. The first movie is more original in the script. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/05/24 Full Review Ollie W The dialogue is nonsensical, pretentious, and insufferable. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Finally, the third and potentially best installment in this sci-fi trilogy by director David Twohy Vin Diesel reprises his role as the man who can see in dark living on a desolate rock in space after being exiled from his kingdom of the Necromonger fleet when all he wanted was a break from ruling A couple of mercanries land on his turf and he has to face all of them Although this rock is also inhabited by savage creatures so Riddick will have to work with them to survive It’s so refreshing that this is so much better than the second film which sadly failed to catch on despite having a larger budget and scope The first one was fine, acting more as a slow burner Here Riddick works way more as a character piece while also relying on slick visuals, cool violence, badass creature designs, and subtle action He co-stars with Dave Bautista, Katee Sackhoof, Bokeem Woodbine, and Karl Urban This pretty much acts as a soft reboot; Vin Disel actually made this film possible because it was a passion project for him This charmingly fuses 1950s style survivalist fiction meets Alien 3, there's certainly some Dune vibes here too Think of this as a Rosetta Stone for the sci-fi sub genre It helps to have a smaller budget even if there are plot holes and inconsistencies But thankfully Vin Diesel is so passionate about this character this is able to rectify many problems from last time Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/08/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Don't waste your time on this one. Rated: D+ Sep 6, 2017 Full Review Wesley Morris Grantland He's spent the bulk of his career hiding in franchises, hypermasculinizing himself. We can live with this. But this new movie makes you wonder whether Diesel can. Jan 6, 2014 Full Review Anthony Lane New Yorker David Twohy's film is scarcely original, but the sheer survivalist grind of our hero, against comical odds, becomes appealingly mad ... Sep 16, 2013 Full Review Iván Kazi EscribiendoCine At times, it's the best type of Science Fiction... [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 8/10 Apr 11, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review When Twohy and Diesel get together with limited funds, it forces them to get creative and, as shown here, deliver a higher brand of B-movie entertainment that leaves you wanting more. Rated: 3/4 Aug 23, 2022 Full Review Sarah Brinks Battleship Pretension It is a fun action movie with a recognizable hero and some good action scenes. I would argue that it is the weakest of the trilogy just because the first act is so CG driven and thus uninteresting. However, when it hits its stride it is a lot of fun.
