Both are very good. Smolarek will be a great sub for who you've got now. Just a different dynamic and has a good ability to win the ball back in addition to scoring. That said Carvalho can be your CB til the end of the game.
I struggled with Smolarek, but Carvalho was a rock for me.
Which one do you need ?
Strikers are Ronaldo and 88 Moreno Center backs are Rudiger and VVD

I have Carvahlo and I don’t find him overly special, but probably an upgrade to rudiger

Carvalho is a beast. Positionally so very good
Smolereck charvaleo was shit for me
