This week’s Revenge was a classic. Not only did it focus on the takedown, but it dished out trust issues galore (some more literal than others), fed us a shocking reveal and gave our hellcats umpteen excuses to bare their claws. Let’s review.
TRUST ME | Victoria’s prenup may be null and void, but Conrad won’t let her anywhere near Grayson Global, divesting all of her stock in the company. With a little nudge from her lawyer, Victoria discovers that if Daniel regains access to his trust, they can combine their shares and take over. So, Daniel convinces Conrad to reactivate his trust… but there’s a catch: The money is his, but the shares stay locked up until he turns 30 or gets married. To Victoria’s dismay, Daniel suggests the latter, taking it as a sign that he should propose to Emily… two months after he met her. We spied a hint of maternal instinct when Victoria put Daniel’s future before her own, not wanting him to rush into marriage as uncertainly as she had with his father. Then again, her lawyer points out that the clause doesn’t specify a successful marriage, and we know from the first episode that Victoria does eventually give some sort of blessing. But as a back-up plan, she also sends lapdog Ashley to tell BFF Emily about Daniel’s wedding-ring trust amendment, claiming she “would want to know if my boyfriend’s motives were pure before he becomes my fiancé.”
TARGET ACQUIRED | Emily’s latest target is Mason Treadwell (guest star Roger Bart, late of Desperate Housewives). Mason, back when he used to be Leo Treadwell, was a journalist covering Flight 197 who was hired to tell the true story of David Clarke. Leo was set to help rescue David — even making a promise to that effect to a young Amanda Clarke — until he met Queen Victoria. After he made what he refers to as “a deal with the devil,” his book “might as well been written by the Graysons,” Emily says. It is also revealed that Emily had a bit of a pyro streak — she apparently burned down her foster family’s home and later, after reading “the truth” in Mason’s tell-all, torched her last photo of her dad.
HOUSE CALL | After posing as a fan of the book and using Nolan’s billionaire status to spark Mason’s interest, Emily gets herself and her pal an invite to the writer’s home. If she wasn’t already scheming when she arrived, Mason’s tour practically created a plan for her. Not only does he write everything on a 1920s typewriter – no autosave there – but he also keeps only one copy of his latest memoir, insisting there should be no copies of work until it’s complete. Handily, said work is conveniently left in plain sight in his office, as is a glass case full of all of the one-on-one recordings he used to write the David Clarke memoir. The cherry on top? He would be reinterviewing Amanda Clarke, thereby allowing Emily to use their encounter to her advantage.
THE PUPPETMASTER | Mason, thinking Amanda harmless, assures Victoria that he is “sure the girl is just here to get some closure.” Victoria responds, “The question is, how far will she go to get it?” Oh, if only she knew. During the interview, Emily talks Fauxmanda through every question (although she doesn’t quite need the coaching). Fauxmanda is very convincing as she outs Mason as a fraud and accuses him of taking the Graysons’ bribe. Nolan quips, “She’s good,” especially when Emily prompts her to stand up and “get in his face,” in turn threatening him and setting the wheels in motion for Mason to blow the lid off the whole conspiracy.
THE PLAN | At Mason’s memoir reading, it would appear that he is about to admit his wrongdoing. But Victoria’s threats cause him to chicken out at the last minute. While Nolan is livid about this (Quote of the night: “Spineless, seersucking dilettante. I haven’t been this disappointed since Phantom Menace!”), it turns out it’s all part of Emily’s plan. Knowing that Victoria had too much power over Mason, she asks Nolan to assist her, capitalizing on Mason’s obsession with penning the billionaire’s biography. While Emily refuses to tell Nolan the details of her plan, she smugly states, “You’ll know it when you see it.”
PLAYING WITH FIRE | As soon as Nolan and Mason leave, Emily arrives, clad in her classic all-black ensemble. She raids the place, pocketing Mason’s entire collection of interview footage before lighting one of Mason’s cigarettes – with Fauxmanda’s lighter, effectively framing her for the crime (especially after the angry interview earlier) – and setting it down on the only copy of his manuscript. As she walks out, the house quickly goes up in flames, exploding behind her. This isn’t the best part, though — the best part is Mason’s reaction. As he cries and screams, pounding his fists into the lawn, Nolan’s two snarky, proud words sum the night up perfectly: “Bad girl.”
WHO’S YOUR DADDY? | While watching footage from Mason’s interviews with her father, Emily discovers what we’ve all been speculating: Charlotte is her half sister. (Executive producer Mike Kelley told us the answer was coming!) Of course, we are left with only a close-up, shocked look on Emily’s face, as she’s unsure of what it means for her future or, more importantly, what it means to her plot to destroy the Graysons.
OTHER NOTES | Declan and Charlotte visit her future prep school and brace themselves for their separation; Nolan tries learning how to shoot a gun with Emily and Daniel (and who knew? Daniel is surprisingly a good shot); Fauxmanda goes all Coyote Ugly at the Stowaway, causing a disagreement with Jack that ends with him deciding to let loose and take her to Atlantic City.
Revenge fans, what did you think of last night’s episode? Were you shocked when Emily discovered Charlotte was her sister? Did you see that fire coming from a mile away? And what are you hoping to see next?
i love you revenge jack and real amanda i love u are my favorite on this wonderful show i love it so much the best new show of the season.
Even though I saw the Charlotte reveal coming a long time ago, it was a great episode and a huge improvement over the last episode.
how the hell could you predict that!?
Nolan and Emily are just pure evil awesomeness when they work together! Definitely my favorite new show of the season!
best duo goes to Emily and Nolan. I love them together and yes welcome back to the red marker
Wow. I have to admit I’ve done a complete 180 when it comes to this show – it’s much better than I hoped.
I love that Charlotte is Emily/Amanda’s half sister. I can’t wait until she finds out about it.
And I really want Emily/Amanda and Jack to hook up. And I don’t mind Daniel, but I really do hope it’s him that dies in a few episodes – it makes it so much soapier!
I don’t think Emily went far enough with her Revenge this week. Treadwell can still rewrite his memoir even though the one copy has been burned. It might take a while but still….
She did burn down the cottage John Cheever lived in too. Was that his or did he rent? Also he didn’t do much to worsen David Clarke’s situation – he just didn’t help him.
She wasn’t angry with him because he worsened David Clarke’s situation she was angry with him because the book he wrote led her to believe all of the lies about her father.
I love all the moving pieces in Revenge. The storylines all have me so intrigued how it is all going to play out. Emily and Nolan are a very dangerous force to recon with. A good match against the Grayson family for sure.
Love the dangerous duo and wished that THEY were really brother & sister! I am still waiting for some flashbacks of Nolan and David Clarke though. I would like to see their relationship explored.
Loved this episode so much, and not just for Madelaine Stowe in a rather gorgeous nightgown for some of the episode. Favourite moment was when Nolan walks up behind Mason as they watch the house burn. I was completely expecting him to become fearful for what Emily will do, but to have him just smile and congratulate her was unexpected and rather immense. They make for the best team!
Guess we’re building up to the engagement party then. Hope they don’t chicken out on killing Daniel.
Luv this show it just keeps building & building. Nolan & Emily what a pair, but I was under the impression they were going to be revealed as siblings, but Charlotte & Emily- interesting :-)
Yes, another great episode. I saw the Charlotte thing coming since the Pilot, and was surprised to see Emily was surprised. The Engagement party is scheduled for episode 15, so early February? There is also plans to do an entire episode that is nothing but flashback to explain the Victoria/David affair in detail.
Now the big question is: Is Victoria’s lawyer actually working for Emily?
Yeah, I’m wondering this as well. It sure seems like he should be…otherwise it’s a great red herring.
This show just keeps getting better. Saw the whole Charlotte thing coming but the best part of all was Treadwell’s dismay.
Can’t wait to see next week.
Shouldn’t Nolan’s quote have been “Spineless, SEERsucking dilettante” in reference to wearing seersucker? or am I wrong?
Yes, you are correct. The correct spelling should/would be seer, not sear.
I love this show! But can’t help but feel that Emily/Amanda is really very disturbed. While it all seems nice if he were to get together with Jack, very sentimental, and they do have chemistry..she truly is a crazy person and might actually hurt him. Can she ever get over her revenge? She is ruthless and cold inside…don’t know how she can redeem herself in the end. But I am going to enjoy the show anyway
I disagree with you completely, we are seeing signs that she is not completely cold but so what if she is– do u not thinking framing her father and having him die and believing that your father is a killer would not make you cold?
I agree she is ruthless when it comes to getting revenge on the people that had a hand in her father being framed, sent to prison and destroying his (and part of her) life – but I don’t think she is crazy. As far as her and Jack ever getting together… don’t know how that can happen unless she is willing to stay Emily forever once she has gotten revenge on everyone. I guess she could eventually tell him the truth at the end but would he be able to look past everything she has done?
The best written shows are the ones where every character is a shade of gray. There are no real good guys on this show, though Jack is probably the most moral character on the show, and no real bad guys except maybe Tyler. I would not call Emily “disturbed”, because that would imply mental problems. I think she is is the smartest character on the show, and after what happened to her she has developed a stoic amorality that serves her well.
I can’t believe no one has mentioned Conrad’s lawyer! She was Sydney Bristow’s best friend on Alias!! Welcome back to TV Francie
Ah, Alias. Still one of my favorite shows! Hated when Francie was killed but the fight between ‘fake’ Francie and Syd was sooooooooo good!
conrad’s lawyer was also the original actress cast for naomi bennett in Private Practice but unfortunately departed the role and was replaced by Audra McDonald.
I saw Charlotte being her half sister a while ago. In the flashbacks, Victoria always only referred to having to break the news of a divorce to Daniel. Charlotte wasn’t born yet, but the timing was right. Best pairing on the show are real Amanda and Nolan. They rock. One of the best things you can say about a TV show is I can’t wait until next week! This so applies to Revenge.
Can I just ask you guys HOW did you say the Charlotte thing coming?
It was a huge shock for me!
Love the show, loved the episode.
see***, not “say”
Sorry
Mostly it was a timing issue. We knew from the pilot that David and Victoria were having an affair 17 years ago, and Charlotte is 16 years old. That and Charlotte is very different in personality from the rest of the Graysons implying she does not belong.
The ep was awesome and Nolan firing a gun was one of my favorite parts; I hope we get to see more of that!
I think at the site of the burning house Nolan said “Atta girl” not “Bad girl”… Really well done episode and glad we are finally starting to see some things move forward!
No… Nolan said Bad…. with a real good snark…
Great show…
My favorite part of this episode was Roger Bart. I love him from Broadway, and it’s always a welcome surprise to see him on TV.
Man I love, love, LOVED this episode. I think the thing that I was most impressed by was not her burning down Treadwell it was her take down of Fauxmanda. She told Nolan that soon Amanda would want to be in a different part of the world and if Jack hadn’t decided to be mister spontaneity she would have had Amanda up against the wall. As it is, she’ll have been at casinos with lots of video footage of her NOT setting the house on fire. ::sigh:: So close. I hope they kill Daniel too if no other reason than to give Emily a new target to chase.
Daniel is a dope. In the first episode though, at the engagement party, i’m wondering what Nolan does to piss Emily off as they seem friendly-ISH now??
I LOVE REVENGE.. Revenge comes on only once a week, so why all the repeats. ABC haven’t you done enough by taking away All My Children n especially OLTL
