Texan folk hero Sir Doug Sahm meets underrated guitarist Amos Garrett and ex-Blasters keyboardist Gene Taylor and they cook like an Austin barbecue.

I, also, was already more familiar with Gene Taylor playing with The Blasters and then The Fabulous Thunderbirds.
Add the third main member of the band known as The Formerly Brothers, Amos Garrett, who I was aware of for playing with Gatemouth Brown on Gate’s (later) 1993 album Long Way Home, and The Return of The Formerly Brothers (1988) was an easy temptation/purchase.
Adding to the solid musicianship of The Formerly Brothers is the addition of sax player Dave Babcock who I feel was underused. The accordion of Cajun artist Queen Ida is more noticeable (two songs).
That is my one complaint of The Formerly Bros album more accordion than saxophone. Members of the band Prairie Oyster are also on hand for Canadian roots music authenticity.
Gene Taylor is the highlight to me when he sings and plays piano on the song Drunk. Taylor also sings on Sure Is a Good Thing while adding keys, while the self explanatory instrumental Gene’s Boogie is another highlight.
If I am incorrect so be it, but, it sounds to me like Amos Garret is singing on Don’t Tell Me. Gene Taylor is listed as the singer on Don’t Tell Me. Whoever sings—it’s good. Amos definitely sings well on Smack Dab in The Middle.
Amos Garrett may be an underrated guitar player, in general, who ‘formerly’ played on Paul Butterfield’s (very good) Better Days album.
Doug Sahm adds to the variety by singing on
Teardrops On My Pillow; and then acquiring a minor impersonation of Bob Dylan on Just like A Woman.
A bit less country and accordion (accordion on Louis Riel, too…really?) and The Return of The Formerly Brothers would have been perfect.
Checkout the Doug Sahm interview from Texas. He explains his time in Canada where album was made—and, I guess, it explains why the accordion on Louis Riel song. Riel was a Canadian revolutionary executed in 1885!
4.6 stars
Texas royality, Sir Doug Sahm, spent two years of his life way up north in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in the late 1980's. Doug had joined forces with Amos Garrett {Maria Muldaur & Paul Butterfield Bands}and Gene Taylor {Rick Nelson's Band & The Blasters} and of course Augie Meyers was involved as well.
This CD finds our almost frozen heroes, well...They are on fire here on this great disc. This music is a mix of old time country, folk, cajun, honkytonk, blues and 50's rock 'n roll. The CD liner calls this 'roots' music, well that ain't right, so don't go looking under any trees to hear this fine music. Amos and Gene do the majority of the songwriting here, but Doug has two of his tunes featured as well and this CD features covers by Hank Williams, Bob Dylan and Tony Glover to round it all out in proper fashion.
Canada was good for Doug, as this record won a Juno award in 1989. The Juno, is Canada's highest music honor, and Doug was now a national treasure in his new home. With: "Amarillo Highway", "Smack Dab In The Middle", "Drunk", "Queen Of The Okanagan" and really great rendition of: "Just Like a Woman." Doug and the boys, had the songs and the right spirit to capture Canada, and that is exactly what they did!
Well of course The USA wasn't giving Doug, Amos or Gene a second thought, as they would only play the newest records of Garth or Reba. Doug, just smiled and kept on playing some 'real' music. Instead of synths and drum machines that create today's country music sounds, Doug was happy with guitars, fiddles, accordians, pianos, stand-up basses, dorbos and real drum sets.
The sounds of old Texas and Alberta are real fine when blended together, and on this CD it all comes to life. The 'new' country that has been popular in America for the last 25 years, is of no use to me, this music might be 'old or traditional' country, but it sure is a pleasure to listen to, and heaps of fun!
Thank You Doug, Amos, Gene, Augie and a cast of thousands.
Canada, you have shown some very fine taste in music.
We miss you Doug !!!
Four Stars !!!
If comparisons are helpful, I had the same sense of "This is it!" were I first heard this record as I did when I first heard The Band's second album--"The Brown Album"--many years ago.
Grab a copy of this CD while it's available in this reissue. I can make no stronger recommendation.
