      What to know

      Critics Consensus

Resident Evil: Retribution offers everything one might reasonably expect from the fifth installment in a heavily action-dependent franchise -- which means very little beyond stylishly hollow CGI-enhanced set pieces. Read critic reviews

There's an argument to be made that the more convoluted the "plot", the better these movies are. None of what's happening in "Retribution" makes any kind of sense and yet I found it the most enjoyable in this improbable series. No one is going to call Paul W.S. Anderson a great filmmaker, but he demonstrates some minor visual ambition here.

Mediocre Resident Evil film, that ends up being alright. If you go into this not expecting a lot from the actors, then you won't be disappointed. The action sequences are this film's greatest strength. Starts off pretty cool but gets stupid, butchering the Resident Evil franchise even further. The actors playing Chris and Leon are honestly an insult to the franchise; they're terribly. Sienna Guillory makes a great Jill Valentine though, so there's that. And by the way, how many nameless henchmen does Umbrella have? A thousand of them probably bought it in this movie. Overall, this is okay, but it could've been so much better. If you want entertaining action sequences without thinking about it much, you might enjoy this film. If you're looking for story and substance though, or if you're a die hard fan of the franchise, you might end up hating Resident Evil : Retribution.

"Hey, boys. Bad idea." Retribution, the fifth installment of Paul Anderson's haggard attempt of re-creating the popular videogame contains a lot of shooting, more shooting, and just a little more shooting of firearms at random targets. It seems Anderson figured the vast amount of action scenes would make-up for horrid acting and the sheer stupidity of the plot. Here, we are given clones of actors from previous installments; submarines, simulations of major cities which include New York City, Moscow, and Tokyo; slow motion martial arts, and for the grand finale; James Bond-esque car chases which compromise of zombies in fur-hats with machine guns and RPGs............... In the end, Retribution is a prime example of a film that legitimately makes you wonder what types of drugs where consumed by the writers. When you make an ambitious film and the past has proven that you do not have the ability to handle it, chaos ensues. This is the third time that Paul Wasted Sperm Anderson sits in the directorial chair and the second time he fails big time in an unforgivable way, but this was the worst. Aiming at a thousand directions, it suddenly lost its course and forgot that the entire premise is an apocalyptic biological virus spread. So we have: - An attempt of Paul to copy Zack Snyder's suburban opening zombie disaster, just to remember the old days *sigh...* - Stupid melodrama. I love kids, even if they are normally annoying in films featuring adult themes, but I just wanted Becky to die. She didn't work as a reminder of Alice having a family past. - Characters from the previous films being resurrected by "Umbrella cloning" in the most preposterous of all ways. - Those damn overused and cheap Matrix remnants. - An embarrassing ending that I wish is handled properly in the future. Yes, I have a remarkable hope. Maybe it is not hope anymore; it is naivete. - Nothing makes fucking sense. So, why the hell do I keep watching? Because if it has Milla Jovovich wearing a tight, dark S & M suit kicking ass with guns, big knives, a horrible editing and sexy poses, I fall like a mouse in a trap! Damn you, neurons! 38/100
