Now, the hunter becomes the hunted as Jake will stop at nothing to track him down to finish the job.

In the future, artificial internal organs will be widely available, but their high cost will lead to a thriving, if bloody, repossession business--at least that's the idea in Repo Men, whose title characters must carry scalpels, and not scruples. When clients default--and, at 19 percent interest rates, it happens all the time--it's up to Remy (Jude Law) and Jake (Forest Whitaker), the two most swashbuckling field operatives at the Union company, to reclaim the merchandise. The film's reviewers largely seemed to miss the wicked humor that underlies Repo Men's kooky futuristic world, as Remy's domestic situation is portrayed with typical backyard barbecues and typical nagging wife who wants hubby to ask his boss about that promotion, already. Everything's amusingly typical, that is, except for the fact that Remy regularly charges into people's apartments and grabs their kidneys. It would be nice to report that director Miguel Sapochnik was able to maintain the initial air of satire (RoboCop comes to mind at least as often as an obvious inspiration such as Brazil), but this movie begins to stumble in its middle section, as Remy himself becomes a subject for organ replacement. (His efforts at self-medicating procedures, especially a climactic surgery sequence, leave Patrick Swayze's similar efforts in Road House far behind.) Sudden shifts to a woman-in-peril scenario--with capable Alice Braga as the target of Union's organ hunters--make for an even more puzzling turn, and the jumbled rhythm of the second act suggests a certain amount of postproduction futzing around. The soundtrack is rife with Guy Ritchie-style song cues, some of which are fun, and Liev Schreiber has a good time smirking his way through his role as Remy's cold-hearted boss. The biggest problem here is that once the movie is over, a great many things don't make any logical sense, and a last-minute switcheroo only muddies the waters. Which are pretty bloody to begin with. --Robert Horton

Ask Me About My Lips
I'm obssssed with the scene in this film where the two main characters voluntarily surrender all the parts of themselves that were up for Repo. Honestly, this is one of the most unique ideas, and that is one of the sexiest scenes, I have encountered in film in recent years. I didn't go into this movie expecting to find a gorgeous love story, but that is exactly what I found.

Good movie

This film is a satire. It's a trenchant commentary on the healthcare system and corporate greed. When I saw it years ago, I didn't pick up on the satire and thought it was just gorey action flick with an outlandish premise--and what were brilliant actors like Jude and Forrest doing in a film like this? But watching it a second time in its satirical context, I realize this is a black comedy. Jude Law is my favorite actor. He commits to every role and is often the best thing in even mediocre films. (See his Karenin in "Anna Karenina" or his villain in "Road to Perdition", where he's on screen for all of five minutes and steals the whole picture). Although his "Repo Men" character is not Hamlet, he is 100% convincing and always fun to watch. Imagine Tom Cruise or Bruce Willis in this role--it would have been your standard cardboard action character where you watch Tom and Bruce being Tom and Bruce. But Jude is a really intelligent actor, and he brings nuance to even the slightest roles. And talk about charisma to burn. (He pumped up for this role, and yowza, he is scorching hot! ) I hate action films and gore bores me, but when you put this film into the context of satire, the buckets of blood become almost comical. (And how do you not show blood in a film about ripping out organs?) When you work your way back from the end twist, the implausibility of what went before makes sense. All in all, this is not a great film, but it's an interesting experiment, and worth watching for the Talented Mr. Law.

Authentic science script
Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2010
Like the unfortunate organ re-donors in this science-fiction thriller that have been rebuilt from borrowed parts, so too does Repo Men suffer the fate of being a movie built upon the foundations of many a science fiction cult classic.

This is all a truly tragic fate, considering the moments of sheer brilliance present in this all too familiar cautionary tale set amidst an all too familiar dystopian future. In 2025, top-dog Remy (Jude Law) has the thankless task of brutally repossessing the artificial organs for which their owners have defaulted payments on. He does so with surgical precision until that one day, when a fateful slice would open Remy's own heart to the plight of humanity.

With a plot largely transplanted from Fahrenheit 451 into the world of Repo: The Genetic Opera, cauterized with a sprinkling of Blade Runner and more than a few stitches of Brazil, Repo Man may have become in itself a cautionary tale against a clockwork picture. Also starring Forest Whitaker and Alice Braga, Repo Men is an unapologetically gory affair, fast paced and frenetic, yet suffering from uneven heavy-handedness.

While newcomer Miguel Sapochnik excels at juggling the dramatic with the sterile action set pieces with the deft hands of an early Steven Spielberg or John Carpenter, the picture ultimately suffers in his inability to skillfully suture together those crucial visual clues, thus telegraphing the ending well in advance to anyone paying attention, though having a `borrowed' ending once again does not help matters much either.

Yet in spite of this, the picture remains an enjoyable, if not déjà vu invoking thrill ride. One cannot help but root for the protagonist and empathize with the surprisingly layered, if not clichéd, antagonists. Though it may lack the explosive intensity of a Michael Bay film for example, the intimate storytelling places attention not so much on the action, but rather on the situations, allowing audiences to better connect with this character driven piece than the more visually oriented science fiction action films.

As such, it should be unsurprising that the cast is mainly comprised of dramatic heavy-hitters that outperform the picture. It is a bold and unusual move, and certainly strange to see not one action marquee name among the cast, with the possible exception of Liev Schreiber. And projecting a more tortured soul than the genre would normally call for, Jude Law, who only recently joined the action scene with his debut in Sherlock Holmes, joins the cast in elevating Repo Men to a clockwork movie actually worth winding.

If only it had been more original, perhaps Repo Men would have become a classic in its own right. However, for a flawed experiment, it still remains one hell of an enjoyable ride.

We're 50+ and we thought this was about repo-ing cars.....
I popped it in and we sat to watch it while we had dinner.
oh boy- oh boy- oh boy!
So it was a bit of a shock at the beginning when it turned out to be something more. Hey, I was on a bit of a spending spree for DVD movies looking to stack up some entertainment for our evenings and snagged this one.

How many of you reading this that have seen the movie are laughing your butts off right now? more than a few I'd say....

Lucky for us, we rolled with it and at the end decided we liked it.
If you're a Scifi fan and you don't mind some gore and appreciate a little moral quandary in your entertainment, my guess is you'll like it.

We've gotten to the point where we WANT something different, something out of the ordinary. Just one thing....this is NOT about two guys going after cars that haven't been paid for. It's not Tokyo Shock which we like on occasion....
but we definitely were surprised.

I saw it had a wide variety of ratings and thought...ok it'll probably be something different. It is NOT a trip to Mamby Pamby Land or for those for whom the color yellow makes them sad. There's even one scene you'll probably back up and play a couple times while you laugh with tears rolling down your face.
"Don't Taze Me Bro!!!"

Everyone else has covered just about everything else in their reviews.
It was good entertainment for an evening as an inexpensive used movie.
'nuff said.

5.0 out of 5 stars Un SF viscéral éprouvant et diablement efficace
Reviewed in France on October 13, 2010
