We didn’t know the building was closed since pandemic but one security let us in to look around since we already parked in their expensive parking building. Two idiots on the other side told us leave a building so we were trying to get back where we parked. Then one was acting like he owns building and the other one was put his hand on his gun treating as we were trespassing even after how we got there. Even our 7 years old kid was with us! We had to go outside and walk all the way around the building to the parking. Yes it was winter and Christmas eve! Thanks for good memories for our trip!!!
I wonder who is in charge for the security and that person doesn’t know how to train their employees and how to treat their guests.Be careful go in that building people!!!

Andiomos was great food. A great waiter the first night but the waitress not so good. Potbellies was good and the MAriott was nice and the gentleman who checked us in was very accomodating but the other lady really couldn't be bothered with anything . Fuel at the Mariott wa good and the guy that worked there was great - after the first day he remembered us and knew our coffee order. But the bar and restaurant are not open weekdays. Also we stayed multiple days along with another couple. Be aware they do not clean your room daily unless you request it.

If you like pot this is your place. Lobbies and elevators reek of marijuana, hell, they sell it right outside the hotel. Do not eat in the restaurant period. Front Marriott entrance is very scary because there are lots of pot smokers street erchants and misfits loitering around. Staff seems very nice. Rooms were clean, but don't expect it to be cleaned daily. Overall it was okay, just shocked they allow the riff raff to hang outside their front entrance and do nothing.

Nothing to do. GM World is closed for “maintenance,” even though all the cars are right there, security guards won’t let you take any pictures (even if there’s nothing to photograph), the Wintergarden is a sad set of benches and a dying Panera. Definitely worth skipping if you’re short of time in Detroit.

I recently stayed at this Marriott as part of a flight crew. I’d like to take a moment to praise one of your front desk workers, Angelique Averett. Her customer service skills were suburb. I stay in hotels often and it was so refreshing to experience such a level of care from her. She is a great asset to your team. Thank you, Angelique.

Great experience at the Renaissance. The room was very spacious, clean, and had a great room. We went to restaurant, Highlands, and it was a great spot! The hotel's gym was massive and immaculate. Would recommend to other business travelers.

When you go on a tour, sign up at the desk by the Winter Garden Entrance. They have tours from 12pm - 4pm. They take you outside on the riverfront and give you a breif history of the river front board walk. You go back inside where they talk to you about the winter garden, the real palm trees, the shops, and the history about downtown and the building. You then go up 740 feet above ground level and you get to walk around the "waiting area" The restaurant is on the floor below. You see many great views. Once you walk around the waiting area you go back down the elevator and learn about the "circulation ring" and about the glass at the front of the building. That basically covers the tour. It is something that is free and fun to do.

Lobby areas are sort of interesting walking along the terraces between interconnected buildings. There is a display of GM cars downstairs (this is now GM Headquarters) and a food court with the standard offerings (some of which were open on Sunday when downtown is closed).
I didn't see any signs that there was an observation area at the top or I would have gone. Give it a try - the views would be great.

We took the tour of the Renaissance Center (which are free) and got to take a glass elevator ride to the 72nd floor and got a 360deg view of the city. The tour is the only way to go to the top unless you want to pay $45 per person to eat at Coach Insignia. The building itself has many shops and restaurants (manly fast food). The building is a city inside a city, and has ts own zip code.

A building so large it has its own zip code...believe it! It's like a little city, with everything you could need.
My wife and I arrived to take the noon free tour after registering at the Pure Detroit shop. There were 22 people signed up, so the group was split into two smaller groups and off we went. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable (he did not have a mic so sometimes it was hard to hear). The high point (no pun intended) was taking the outside elevator up to the Coach Insignia restaurant (tip: when you get into the elevator, face away from the door and you'll have a great view of the riverfront area as you ride up). Looking out the restaurant windows, we listened to some Detroit history and our guide pointed out area attractions below.
There is a large GM showroom on the lower level with current vehicles which are unlocked and available for up-close inspection. The People Mover has a RenCen station which we later used to make a loop of the downtown area. Also accessible on the ground level is the Detroit Riverwalk, a wonderful option when the weather is warmer and less windy than on the day we visited. Restaurants and limited shopping are available, and there is a Green Ring glass walkway encircling the mezzanine which many workers use to get their walking in during lunch break.
The building had many beautiful accents, such as the glass sculpture "Borealis" in the main lobby.
This was a great place to launch our adventure in downtown Detroit!

Roof top restaurant has changed owners several times. You might call and ask. It changed again after our last visit.

Hi Miss Klaas
I only visited the riverwalk once after being away for over 13 years and I do believe I seen observation viewers along the riverfront.
GM's headquarters does have a revolving restaurant, observation deck at the very top of the Ren Cen.
Hope this helps and enjoy your travels!

I worked in the RenCen for a couple years. The top two floors, one a restaurant, one a lounge, revolved when I visited and dined there in the 1980s. It took exactly one hour for it to make a 360-degree revolution. Those two levels were closed for many years, then was re-opened as Coach Insignia for a number of years including when I worked at the RenCen between 2012 - 2014. I spoke to the manager about the movement. When they took over the space they hoped to re-activate the revolving floor. What they found was that the gears, motor and chain mechanism was badly damaged, worn, and rusted from the lack of use and maintenance. It was going to cost a fortune to repair it. The repairs would have created a huge delay in opening the space and required re-engineering for modifications and space renovations needed. The mechanism was therefore removed and the floor fixed into place for safety reasons. As others have mentioned Coach Insignia closed a few years ago.
