Yorkshire, 1974. Fear, mistrust and institutionalised police corruption are running riot. Rookie journalist Eddie Dunford is determined to search for the truth in an increasingly complex maze of lies and deceit surrounding the police investigation into a series of child abductions. When young Clare Kemplay goes missing, Eddie and his colleague, Barry, persuade their editor to let them investigate links with two similar abductions that draw them into a deadly world of secrecy, intimidation, shocking revelations and police brutality.

The thing with a slow burn thriller is that there has to be a pay off that's worth the wait. The first Red Riding film had me worried more than once, but it delivers what it should do in spades.
Shot with total dedication to recreate the year in its title it looks and feels fantastic, creating a really immersive film. Everything breathes authenticity, which is a key part in the success of this film, as it follows and unfolds an investigation step by step, that needs that injection of reality to make it as gripping as it is.

I remember seeing this trilogy available maybe on Netflix when it first came out and I thought “eh maybe” but never got around to it. Then for some reason last night I saw it on Prime and thought “yeah definitely” so I gave this first part a go and WOW did I enjoy it. And then I find out it’s an English “made for TV” movie?!! Like it is just mind blowing just how vastly superior their television entertainment is to our own. My BritBox streaming subscription more than pays for itself let me tell you!

A young journalist is assigned to cover the abduction of a little girl in a backwater Yorkshire town. After a while he becomes obsessed with the case, convinced that there is a lot more behind it than meets the eye.
I enjoy a gritty procedural as much as the next guy. And I'm well aware that the world can be a very ugly place. The problem with "Red Riding 1974" is that it seems to wallow in this ugliness. There is not a single sympathetic person in this movie. Everyone is either corrupt or an asshole. Red Riding:1974 is such a weird yet interesting film. It’s the story of a rookie reporter who must investigate the disappearances of a young girl in Yorkshire. However, there’s more storylines that weave their way into the fray before totally taking over the story. That works both for and against the film. The story that eventually takes over is still an interesting one and it keeps you hooked, however I would have liked them to focus more on the core story. However, I understand that this is a trilogy so they are trying to stretch it out.

Andrew Garfield is Eddie Dunford, the smooth and cool journalist of Yorkshire. I’m talking buttoned up shirt with the top 2 unbuttoned and a leather jacket to go with.
