I am a big fan of soul music, especially music from the 1960/1970s and Marvin Gaye is my favourite soul singer. If you are a fan you will enjoy this package. It consists of a DVD, a CD and a 24 page booklet. The 1st section on the DVD consists of 16 performances of TV appearances by Marvin Gaye, spanning the years 1964 to 1981 so it pretty much covers his entire career. The early performances were filmed in black and white but the majority were in colour. Each performance is interspersed with interviews with Marvin in which he talks about his life and career. These interviews give us an interesting insight into his personality. He is articulate and comes across as surprisingly humble, particularly in the early interviews. The performances included many of his greatest hits eg. "I heard it through the grapevine", "What's going on", "Lets get it on" but also includes tracks which I was not familiar with eg. "A funky space reincarnation". The 2nd part of the DVD shows an entire concert which took place in Ostend in 1981. One odd fact is that there is some repetition. The 1st section of the DVD includes footage of his performance of songs "Lets get it on" and "Come get to this" taken from the Ostend concert so they appear twice on the DVD. Why? Surely it would have made sense to include different songs rather than have the same 2 performances repeated? Unfortunately some of his best known and most loved songs are not included on the DVD, eg. no "Sexual Healing" and no "Abraham Martin & John". The concert in Ostend, although enjoyable, was a bit lacking in atmosphere and Marvin's performance overall was very smooth and sophisticated. He was wearing a tuxedo, frilly shirt and bow tie and he seemed to be aiming to be like Frank Sinatra or a similar "crooner". Personally I prefer my soul music to be grittier, a bit more rough around the edges so this was a bit disappointing. Given that Marvin was considered a sex symbol, a bit more passion and general sexiness would have been great (the exception to this is his performance here of "Lets get it on" which is very sexy indeed!). However, his voice and his songs are as great as ever so I still enjoyed the performances. The audio CD has 9 tracks recorded live In Holland in 1976. Again we got "Come get to this and "Lets get it on" (3 times in total in this package) plus a few more tracks. The accompanying booklet is an interesting and informative read. The film and sound quality overall in this package is very good and if you are a fan you will enjoy it. Worth Buying.

Ce DVD vaut beaucoup par le clip de What's goin On. On aimerait en avoir plus de ce concert. Sinon, c'est tout de même destiné aux aficionados. Voir Marvin louper le départ d'une chanson en playback d'une émission de télé, par exemple, est de l'ordre du documentaire, mais n'apporte pas grand chose à sa gloire.
Tout de même, le personnage est tellement complexe que, comme tout vrai artiste, on perçoit les failles et les grâces de l'oeuvre tout au long de ce recueil de prestations.
Au final, je ne regrette pas de l'avoir acheté, mais on ne discute pas les passions.
