Château Troplong-Mondot: Raymond-Théodore Troplong

Through his marriage into the de Sèze family the vineyards thus came into the hands of Jean Julien Martial Troplong, and after the death of his wife, Marthe Paule Céphise de Sèze, in 1826, he married again. His second wife was Jeanne Hélène Elisabeth Troplong (born 1806), presumably a cousin, and they had a son Jean Marie Casimir Édouard Troplong-Mondot (1840 – 1928). The estate was then passed through the Troplong family although not to their son, but to Jeanne’s brother, Raymond-Théodore Troplong (1795 – 1869).

Raymond-Théodore was notable for many achievements; not only was he an author and advocate, he was also president of the French Senate from 1852 until his death, as well as being a recipient of the Grand Croix de la Légion d’Honneur. Certainly by the time the 1868 Cocks et Féret was published he was listed as proprietor here (under the name Troplong, président du Sénat). The domaine was listed second in the commune, behind only Château Bel-Air, so it was clearly very highly regarded, and the authors heaped praise upon the vineyard, the vines, the terroir, the cellars, indeed just about every aspect of the domaine you can imagine.
