Ray Harryhausen on 4K, or is it worth it?

Collection

Already a significant amount of grain due to the nature of the filming technique. It’s a bet a crapload of DNR would be used.

Harryhausen is ALWAYS worth it, whatever it is!

Those aren’t 4K though, they’re only Blu-ray? As far as I know, no Harryhausen has come out on 4K yet.

They aren’t. But given the current trend do you feel we need an upgrade?

Ah I see what you mean. It depends on the restoration - I have all the blu-rays and they do look amazing (I’m a huge Harryhausen fan), but yeah, some of the effects shots have so much grain I doubt 4K would be worth the effort.

Having said that, 4K offers more bandwidth, so the movies could be presented with less compression, so there would be marginal gains even with no new restoration. But I suspect HD is as high as we’re going to go - although I wouldn’t be surprised if MAYBE a high-profile film like Jason gets a 4K edition sometime.

Ray Harryhausen movies aren't released on 4K.

I seem to remember 7th Voyage getting a 4K scan a while back that looked pretty good. Surprised we haven't gotten the actual 4K yet.

The idea that the presence of (even heavy) grain has something to do with a 4K release being worth it or not is fundamentally false.

The grain would be finer resolved and less compressed in 4K, which is better. Also the grain has nothing to do with other improvements like the colors and/or the contrast.

The (noticable) usage of DNR is a mistake, no matter the format. But its usage is the greatest mistake in combination with the 4K format.

It’s about the special features, some didn’t make the transition.

To be clear my collection includes DVD, US and UK Blu-Ray. Pretty sure I have some VHS in storage too. My question is, will an upgrade help or hurt? Or have we reached the best quality possible? I saw his last 3 movies in a theater and they were grainy then.

I have the 3 Sinbad blurays from Indicator, I had so much fun watching them on my projector, great picture quality. Sure they're grainy but pretty good overall, massive upgrade from the DVDs.

The imperfections are what help the fantasy.

I’d love to see them on 4K. They are “niche” enough that there isn’t any need to appeal to the casual masses with DNR. They can present them automatically, knowing that will be preferred by the target audience.
